APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Golf

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsRichmond, KY – For much of the season Austin Peay State University women’s golf team has saved its best round for last during tournament play. Unfortunately, the Lady Govs broke the mold in Saturday’s final round of the EKU Colonel Classic

The Lady Govs shot a final round 324—17 shots worse than APSU’s second round, Friday—to end with a 949 (318-307-324) total. As a result of Saturday disappointing round, the Lady Govs slipped from fifth ninth in the final standings. Akron won the tourney with a 914, followed by Toledo and Morehead State, each with 921s.

“We let too many shots get away from us today,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “We have to learn from our mistakes.
“After a long week we will need to regroup and get back to work, get ready for the OVC tournament (April 22-24).”

Tabitha BeardRedshirt sophomore Tabitha Beard recorded her career best 54-hole score with a 239. After shooting 76-74, Friday, Beard scrambled for a 79 on Saturday to finish in a seventh-place tie, also her best career-best tourney finish.

“I am very proud of Tabitha,” APSU coach Sara Robson. “She really had a great tournament.”

Beard was the only Lady Govs crack 80 during the final round.  Junior Lauren Bond finished the tournament in a 25th-place tie after shooting a final-round 81 for a 237 (80-76-81).

Lauren BondFreshman Meghan Mueller couldn’t repeat Friday’s two solid rounds, slipping to an 84, Saturday, to finish with a 239 (77-78-84). Sophomore Tala Mumford (85-82-82) and senior Ashley Averitt (88-79-82) were next with 249s.

Junior Holly Batey, playing as an individual, finished at 252 (82-85-85).

“We need to realize that we are capable of playing every day like we did Friday,” Robson said. “We need to work hard until OVCs, that is the time to peak.

“We are talented in many ways. It will take confidence, dedication and competitiveness for three straight days to place well in the OVC tournament.”
