APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Tennis
Clarksville, TN – Sophomore Andra Cornea, of the Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team, was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Female Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
“I’m very happy for Andra,” said head coach Malik Tabet. “She deserves this award for the hard work she’s put in this season. Her mental toughness has really improved and that has helped her become a much better match player.”
Cornea has been a vital part of the Lady Govs lineup, playing at No. 4 singles. During the past week, she was the only Lady Govs player to go undefeated in both singles and doubles during matches against Tennessee State and Jacksonville State.
Against Tennessee State, Cornea had a straight-set win at No. 3 singles and worked a shutout No. 2 doubles win alongside freshman Ornella Di Salvo. The next day, Cornea allowed only two games to Jacksonville State’s Zoe Bizinos in a straight-set win at No. 4 singles, while also teaming with Di Salvo for a No. 2 doubles win.
Cornea is the second Lady Govs player to earn OVC Player of the Week honors. Senior Vanja Tomic shared the award, March 21st.
