Austin Peay State University Provost Lecture Series to focus on sculpture collection at Nashville Parthenon

APSU

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University classics professor whose search for paperwork about the acquisition of a sculpture collection at the Parthenon in Nashville has taken him to London will share his story as part of APSU’s next Provost Lecture Series.

Dr. Tim Winters, professor of languages and literature, will present at 3:00pm, Thursday, April 12th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. The event is free and open to the public. The title of his talk is “Casting About: The Origins of the Sculpture Collection at the Nashville Parthenon.”

“The paper is about a detective story, in a way,” Winters said. “I was speaking with the director of the Parthenon in Nashville, Wesley Paine, about the sculpture collection, and she mentioned that somehow all of the paperwork regarding the acquisition of the casts that adorn the building had been lost. I offered to help try to track it down, and the result took me not only to Nashville, but to the Keeper of Antiquities at the British Museum in London as well, and the hunt is not over yet. I will also be looking into a lead in Athens this coming summer.”

Winters earned his B.A. in Greek at the University of Arizona, M.A. and Ph.D. at Ohio State University. He has been teaching Greek, Latin and archaeology for more than 20 years. He studied archaeology in Greece for two years at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, where he was a Fulbright Fellow. He also has worked on excavations at Corinth, Nemea and Torone.

He was a recipient of the Socrates Award at APSU for excellence in teaching and was also named a National Alumni Association Distinguished Professor in 2009.  In the summers, he takes students to study abroad in Greece, and this year, for the third time, he will be Gertrude Smith Professor at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, where he will teach an intensive course in Greek archaeology. His research interests lie in Greek epigraphy, archaeology and pedagogy.

Other sessions in the Provost Lecture Series also are planned for the academic year. All sessions are from 3:00pm-4:30pm in the MUC, Room 303 (unless noted otherwise) and include the following:

April 19th, MUC 103: Dr. Jeffrey Wood, professor of music

The Provost Lecture Series seeks to foster a spirit of intellectual and scholarly inquiry among faculty, staff and students. The program will be used as a platform for APSU faculty members who are recent recipients of provost summer grants, who have been awarded faculty development leaves and who have engaged in recent scholarly inquiry during sabbatical leaves.

APSU faculty members with recent research of acclaim also will be given a platform within this series. In addition, other faculty members of local or widespread renown will be invited to lecture within this series.
