Disproportionate Minority Contact Task Force to host the 2nd Annual Joint Conference on Juvenile Justice at Austin Peay State University

Clarksville, TNTennessee Commission on Children and YouthOn April 21st, 2012 the Montgomery County Disproportionate Minority Contact Task Force (DMC Task Force) will host the 2nd Annual Joint Conference on Juvenile Justice at the Austin Peay State University, Morgan University Center on the 3rd floor from 8:30am– 4:30pm.

The purpose of the conference is the prevention of juvenile delinquency via increasing the awareness of issues, programs and resources available to youth, parents, teachers, college students, advocates, officers of the court, and concerned citizens. The Conference seeks to develop a comprehensive strategy for raising the awareness of disproportionate confinement of minority youth in the juvenile justice system and promote the best practices and policies to eradicate the problem of over representation in secure confinement.

The DMC Task Force is a Tennessee government program that operates under the umbrella of the Tennessee Commission on Children & Youth and the Austin Peay State University Juvenile Justice Grant.

Last year’s event drew over 20 organizations, 200 participates and attendees. The booths, presenters and breakout sessions provided education on such subjects as, bullying, gang awareness, and the importance of being a big brother big sister, mentorship and much, much more!

This year our special guest speaker will be the Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee, Mr. Lowell Perry, Jr. Along with a special presentation from the internationally known group, Rachel’s Challenge.

This event is Free and Open to the Public.

Lowell Perry Jr. is the CEO for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee. Perry is an experienced business development and marketing executive with an extensive background that includes strategic alliances, start-ups, automotive, turnarounds, performance management, and special expertise in minority business development as a viable growth strategy.

He was recently honored by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America as national CEO of the Year and the agency was recognized as one of the top 35 out of 423 agencies nationwide in all-around performance, serving over 1500 children in 2006.

He has also been the COO of an automotive manufacturing operation, and served as an NFL front office executive for the Seattle Seahawks.

Lowell holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Yale University and is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

About Rachel’s Challenge

Rachel's ChallengeRachel Joy Scott was the first person killed in the Columbine High School tragedy on April 20, 1999. Immediately after the tragedy, her father Darrell began to speak around the nation and used writings and drawings from Rachel’s many diaries to illustrate the need for a kinder, more compassionate nation. Today, Darrell and thirty other speakers honor Rachel’s life by reaching the nation with Rachel’s simple but profound message.

Her acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the foundation for one of the most life-changing school programs in America.

The presentation will consist of powerful video/audio footage, both of of Rachel’s life and the Columbine tragedy. The presentation will hold you spell-bound, then motivate and challenge you towards making a positive change in the way you treat others.
