Nashville Sounds Commit Four Errors and Fall 6-4 to the New Orleans Zephyrs in Home Opener

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds committed four errors while being handed a 6-4 loss to the visiting New Orleans Zephyrs in front of 7,333 fans in the home opener at Greer Stadium on Friday night.

Nashville catcher Martin Maldonado went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, but also committed two of the club’s errors from behind the dish.

The four errors committed by the Sounds were the most since the club made four gasps in a 15-4 defeat on May 24th, 2011 at Tacoma.

The Zephyrs scored the first run of the game on the first two errors on the night by the Sounds. New Orleans second baseman Donovan Solano (3-for-4) singled and then advanced to third on an infield throwing error from starter Brian Baker.

During the ensuing at-bat with runners on the corners, Maldonado attempted to throw out Scott Cousins stealing second base, but threw the ball into center field to allow Solano to score.

Third baseman Matt Dominguez and catcher Luke Montz each belted solo homers in the second and fourth innings for a 3-0 lead.

New Orleans tacked on their final three runs in the top of the fifth for 6-0 advantage. Outfielder Kevin Mattison doubled to lead off the frame and later scored on another errant pickoff throw from Maldonado to third base. The Zephyrs later added the other two runs on a Bryan Petersen RBI and sacrifice fly from Dominguez.

Nashville rebounded to score their four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Eric Farris scored first after singling to lead off the frame, stealing second base, and coming home on Edwin Maysonet’s RBI single.

With the bases loaded after two straight singles from Hainley Statia and Logan Schafer, Caleb Gindl and Sean Halton brought home the next two runs on RBI groundouts. Maldonado singled in the last run to score Schafer.

Baker (1-1) was touched for six runs (five earned) on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings for the loss.

Amaury Rivas relieved Baker to finish the fifth, walking two and striking out one while allowing both inherited runners to score. Jim Henderson fanned one over two scoreless frames to extend his scoreless inning streak to open the season. Vinnie Chulk struck out two batters in a scoreless inning to finish the game.

New Orleans starter Tom Koehler gave up four runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. Elih Villanueva tossed 2 1/3 frames in relief to move to 3-0 on the season. Sandy Rosario worked around an inning-opening hit-by-pitch convert his PCL-leading fourth save.

The Sounds and Zephyrs will continue their series and play the second game of a four-game series at 6:35pm CT on Saturday night at Greer Stadium. Nashville right-hander Seth McClung (0-1, 9.00) will toe the rubber against Zephyrs righty J.D. Martin (0-0, 6.23).
