Nashville Sounds defeat the New Orleans Zephyrs for First Home Win

Caleb Gindl, Martin Maldonado Power Nashville Sounds To 9-5 Victory

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – Caleb Gindl’s three-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning gave the Nashville Sounds the lead for good en route to a 9-5 victory over the visiting New Orleans Zephyrs on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium.

The Sounds (3-7) snapped a two-game skid and picked up their first home victory of the year despite being out-hit, 13-7, in the contest. The loss snapped a PCL-best five-game winning streak for the Z’s.

Martin Maldonado, who homered, and Edwin Maysonet each had two hits to join Gindl in powering the Sounds’ offense in the win.

New Orleans got off to a quick start against Sounds starter Seth McClung, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning during a 39-pitch frame for the  right-hander.

Kevin Mattison and Donovan Solano opened the contest with back-to-back doubles to put the visitors on the board. After the next two batters were retired, Bryan Petersen hit a dribbler up the third base line for a two-out RBI infield single that upped the Z’s lead to 2-0.

Nashville rallied to take a 4-2 lead in the home half of the second inning in an error-filled frame for the Zephyrs.

After Taylor Green was hit by a J.D. Martin pitch to open the inning, Maldonado doubled to left, where Petersen misplayed the ball and allowed Green to score. On the relay throw home, shortstop Gil Velazquez’s toss was off-line and eluded catcher Clint Sammons to allow Maldonado to reach third.

Following a Hainley Statia strikeout, Corey Patterson hit a grounder to second against a drawn-in infield and Solano, the second baseman, threw home to catch Maldonado in a rundown. The Sounds’ catcher was ultimately awarded home plate on an obstruction call after colliding with Sammons in the basepaths during the rundown, tying the score at 2-2.

Maysonet (2-for-3) gave the Sounds their first lead of the series when he followed with an RBI triple down the right field line that dropped just out of the reach of a diving Scott Cousins. McClung helped his own cause and drove in the fourth Nashville run of the frame with a line-drive sacrifice fly to center that brought home Maysonet for a 4-2 lead.

New Orleans tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth on Sammons’ bases-loaded, two-run single to right off McClung, who took a no-decision for the Sounds after allowing four runs on seven hits in four innings of work.

The Sounds reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth when they loaded the bases against Martin and Gindl unloaded them with a two-out, bases-clearing double to right that put the home team in front by a 7-4 margin.

Martin (0-2) took the loss for the Z’s after giving up seven runs (five earned) on six hits with four strikeouts in his four innings of action.

Beau Jones took over on the New Orleans hill in the fifth and the Sounds immediately added to their advantage against him. After Green walked to open the inning, Maldonado (2-for-4) drove a 1-0 Jones offering over the wall in left for his second home run of the year, making it a 9-4 game.

New Orleans got a run back in the eighth against Donovan Hand when Petersen doubled and later scored on a Velazquez groundout.

Amaury Rivas (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Sounds after working two scoreless frames behind McClung.

Mike McClendon closed out the victory with a scoreless ninth for Nashville.

The teams continue the series with a 2:05pm matinee on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Wily Peralta (0-1, 2.45), the Brewers’ top prospect, makes his first home start of the season for the Sounds. New Orleans will send right-hander Alex Sanabia (1-0, 0.64) to the hill in a rematch of the Opening Night pitching matchup on April 7th in New Orleans.
