Austin Peay State University | Clarksville TN
Clarksville, TN – On Saturday, April 14th, the Austin Peay Track and Field team hosted their annual APSU Governors High School Classic at Governors Stadium. High School teams began arriving at 9:30am with the first event starting at 10:00am sharp. The event lasted all day. The awards ceremony was at 6:00pm.
“The APSU High School Classic that was started six years ago as a fund raiser for the Austin Peay Track and Field team.” said APSU Track and Field head coach Doug Molnar. “We wanted to start a Track and Field event for Montgomery County Schools that would be the jewel event of the year.”
There were 15 local and area high schools that attended this year’s event. They were: Kenwood High School, West Creek High School, Montgomery Central High School, Clarksville High School, Fort Campbell High School, McGavock High School, Northeast High School, Antioch High School, Rossview High School, Lebanon High School, Northwest High School, Greenbrier High School, Cane Ridge High School, Marshall County High School and White House-Heritage High School.“We had 15 highly competitive teams in this years event” stated Molnar. “Normally we would have between 20 to 25 teams competing in our event, but this year schedules aligned so that two other track meets were going on at the same time.”
The events at this years event were: 100m Dash, 200m Dash, 400m Dash, 800m Run, 1,600m Run, 3,200m Run, 110m Hurdles, 300m Low Hurdles, 2,000m Steeplechase (Boys), 1,500m Steeplechase (Girls), 4 x 100m Relay, 4 x 200m Relay, 4 x 400m Relay, 4 x 800m Relay, High Jump, Pole Vault, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Shot Put, and Discus Throw.
Events went off like clockwork. Once one heat was completed, the next set of competitors were being readied for the next heat while competitors for the next event were being called in.
At some Track and Field events, there can be 10 minute delays between heats, 15-20 minutes between events. This was not the case with Austin Peay’s meet. Heats were constantly going. Next events were quickly setup. Even hurdles, normally the longest to setup was done quickly and efficiently. The result was a meet with something constantly going on without any real down times.
“I believe this year was one of the better run meets that we have done” said Molnar. “I want to give congratulations and thanks to the members of the APSU Track and Field team that came out to help today along with all the other volunteers. Job well done.”
All of the events were highly competitive. Several were decided by a few tenths of a second. “There was some really great competitions going on out there today” said Molnar. “This has been one of the most competitive meets we’ve put on.”
West Creek High School came was first amongst the Boy’s Teams. Clarksville High came in second. Fort Campbell High School edged out McGavock by 0.5 points to come in third.
Amongst the Girl’s Teams, Northeast High School came in first place. Rossview came in second. Fort Campbell High School came in third place over Northwest and West Creek by 0.5 points.
“Traditionally, Montgomery County has always produced great track and field athletes” stated Molnar. “I want to congratulate all of the teams for their efforts today.”
