Brentwood, TN – Austin Peay State University starting pitcher Zach Toney has been named the adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Toney, of D’Iberville, MS (Jones County JC), made his first career start as first-place Austin Peay’s No. 1 conference starter Friday against Jacksonville State. The senior right hander led Austin Peay to their only victory on the weekend, holding the second-place Gamecocks to one hit and zero runs over his eight innings. After walking the bases loaded and working out of the jam in the first, Toney surrendered only a third inning walk before allowing his lone base hit with one out in the fifth. That hit seemed to galvanize the Govs hurler as he retired the final 14 batters he faced.
The win was Toney’s third this season and first since March 24th at Southeast Missouri. He is the second Austin Peay pitcher to win the league’s weekly award, joining junior closer Tyler Rogers who earned the honor after Week 6 action.
It is the fifth time overall an Austin Peay player has won a weekly baseball award, junior shortstop Reed Harper (twice) and senior first baseman Tyler Childress also have won the weekly player honor.
Austin Peay has this week off for finals before traveling to SIU Edwardsville for a three-game OVC series, beginning with a 6:00pm, Friday contest.
