APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Track and Field

The Lady Govs tallied 14 points on the opening day. Host SEMO leads the way with 83 points, followed by defending champ Eastern Illinois (72.5), Murray State (43), Jacksonville State (30) and Tennessee State (14.5).

Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky, each with six points, trail the Lady Govs while Tennessee Tech has four points. The competition will conclude Saturday with the majority of the track finals being held.

Junior Lauren Lyles scored APSU’s most points, Friday, with a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 8 inches. Senior Tanesha Campbell, battling a foot injury, finished sixth in the discus with a heave of 37-04 while APSU picked up five points in the pole vault, garnering the sixth (Nicole Bressner, 10 feet, 11.75 inches) and seventh (Molly Basch, 10-06)-place finishes.

Sophomore Kendra Kirksey picked up APSU’s other two points with a seventh-place finish in the steeplechase with a 12:15.25 time.

“It was a little bit of a rough day,” APSU coach Doug Molnar said. “The weather was extremely warm today and it took its toll. We did have some decent performances. Lauren’s jump was a P.R. (personal best). Our pole vaulters also did a pretty good job.”

The Lady Govs hope to move up in the standing Saturday as some of their stronger events—the shot put, the hammer throw, the hurdles and the 800-meter (Chantelle Gray captured her heat, Friday).

“Chantelle won her heat in the 800 and she has the OVC’s best time,” Molnar said. “She will run the 1500 before the 800 so we will see what effect that will have.

“Tanesha threw the 137-04 on her first attempt (in the discus) before that foot (injury) stopped her. We will see how she comes out tomorrow in the shot and (hammer) throw.  We also have the hurdles, the 4×400, the 4×100 all tomorrow. We can score points in those events. If we perform well, we still could move up to fourth or fifth.”
