Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam proclaims May 11th Military Spouse Day

Presidential Tradition Continues in Tennessee

The Seal of the State of TennesseeNashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and state Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder today announced May 11th, 2012 is Military Spouse Day. The day of recognition for military spouses is observed throughout the country to include Tennessee.

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed a day of observance to recognize and honor the contributions and sacrifices of military spouses.

The United States Armed Forces now set aside the Friday before Mother’s Day each year to pay tribute spouses who continue to take care of their families and homes while their uniformed loved ones answer the call to serve their country.

“Military spouses play a vital role in the commitment and readiness of our service members,” Grinder said.  “It is essential to express our gratitude and remember the sacrifices military spouses make to our country.  Although their support is usually quiet and subtle, it serves as a critical foundation to our Armed Forces and we want to publicly recognize the significant role of our military spouses.

The Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs is organized to accomplish its mission of serving Tennessee’s veterans and their families with dignity and compassion, and being their principle advocate in ensuring they receive the care, support, earned entitlements, and recognition they earned in service to our nation.
