Nashville Sounds Baseball
Oklahoma City, OK – The Oklahoma City RedHawks completed a four-game series sweep of the Nashville Sounds with a 5-3 victory on Friday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Nashville (20-34) has lost 11 of its 12 games against the RedHawks this season, including each of the last nine meetings between the teams. Nine of the 12 contests in the series were decided by two runs or less.
The sweep was Nashville’s third of the season and second by the hands by the RedHawks. The Sounds dropped four straight to the RedHawks from April 18th-20th at Greer Stadium.Going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position on the night, Nashville led off with an extra-base hit in each of the first four innings, but managed to only score once during that time on Andy Gonzalez’s first homer of the season.
Oklahoma City starter Paul Clemens (6- 4) gave up one run on five hits (all against the leadoff hitter) while striking out five in seven innings for the win.
Starting pitcher Wily Peralta saw eight Oklahoma City batters and was touched for three runs in the bottom of the first as the RedHawks quickly took a 3-0 advantage. After a walk to Scott Moore, Brett Wallace hit a two-out single for the first run before Angel Sanchez later brought home two more with another two-out single.
The two teams traded runs in the second inning thanks to solo homers by Gonzalez and Brian Bixler.
Oklahoma City tacked on their final run in the third for a 5-1 lead. With the bases loaded thanks to a hit-by-pitch, walk, and single, Landon Powell hit an RBI infield groundout to third base.
Nashville scored two late runs in the top of the ninth, but came up short with the tying run at the plate. With runners on first and second and one out, outfielder Jay Gibbons hit an opposite-field, RBI double to left field against the shift to score Jordan Brown and move Gonzalez to third. Second baseman Eric Farris then grounded out to shortstop to allow Gonzalez to score.
Catcher Jason Jaramillo ended the ninth-inning rally by grounding out to first.
In his fifth consecutive loss, Peralta (1-7) yielded five runs on six hits and a season-high six walks in 4 1/3 innings. The 23-year-old also fanned two with 93 pitches, 49 for strikes.
Reliever Robert Wooten tossed 2 2/3 of scoreless innings while stranding all three of his inherited runners. Jim Henderson also threw a scoreless frame.
The Sounds return to Music City tomorrow to open a brief four-game homestand against New Orleans. It will be the teams’ third series of the year; the Zephyrs have won five of the eight contests against Nashville in 2012. Sounds right-hander Claudio Vargas (0-0, 6.52) will take the mound against New Orleans Alex Sanabia (3-3, 2.79).
