How would you like to find a Kate Spade purse for a dollar, a cordial carafe and six glasses for five dollars, or a couple of German steins for $20? That’s just a sample of the bargains that I have located at the Historic District Yard Sale in Springfield, Tennessee in years past.
This year’s gigantic yard sale is scheduled for Saturday, June 9. Almost every yard in the downtown historic district bordered by Fifth Avenue (the extension of Route 49 leading into Springfield) is covered with offerings. Come early to beat the crowds.
If you proceed further into Springfield to the Court Square around the historic courthouse, you’ll find Taste of Country featuring the Master Gardeners Plant Sale and Garden Tour, a Motorcycle Poker Run, live Country and Bluegrass music on the Courthouse Stage, a Corvette rally, a Corn Hole Tournament, the Antique Car Drive In, and Kids Country.
Every year representatives from Lowe’s help hundreds of kids put together special kits like those featured in their kids’ craft events on Saturdays in the store. Other kids’ events include pony rides, the hay maze, peddle car races, baby goats, bounce houses and face painting. You can see the full schedule at http://tasteofcountryusa.com.
If you’re hankering to find everything from collectibles to antiques, go on over to the Springfield Antiques Barn at 700 Willow Street just one block east of the courthouse square. Owner Larry Whitworth has 80 dealers on two massive floors in the largest antiques arena in the area. Open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. To 5:00 p.m. except Thursday when they are open until 7:00 p.m., they are closed on Sunday.
Something to Eat
The Depot
When you get hungry, you can eat on the square at Taste of Country or go down Main Street to 1007 South Main Street where people from all over middle Tennessee flock for some of the best food ever! The Depot Bar and Grill has a menu featuring 10 appetizers like “South of the Border” quesadilla or Fired Dill Pickle Spears, 19 Entrees ranging from Grilled Atlantic Salmon to Texas Tails (two beef tenderloin tails that will melt in your mouth!), six pastas and stir-fry entrees, nine side items, 17 sandwiches, and nine soups and salad choices. Your favorite drink from sweet tea to scotch on the rocks is available too. If you can’t find something here you’ll love, you’re just too picky!
They’re open Monday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., on Friday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and are closed on Sunday. Doug Voise has had 35 years of experience in the restaurant business; his hospitality and the food served at the Depot can’t be topped!
Burdett’s Tea Shop & Trading Company
If you want to escape into a quiet environment where your cares will melt away, just travel down South Main Street to Burdett’s Tea Shop and Trading Company at 618. Here you’ll find crocheted tablecloths, linen napkins, and delightful lunches accompanied by fruit tea, sweet tea, coffee, hot chocolate, your favorite soft drink or root beer, and an amazing assortment of hot teas.
You can indulge in Tea for One or more served on tiered trays with lovely finger sandwiches, sweets, and cheeses. Burdett’s also has a scone of the day every day with flavors like lemon zest, apricot almond, apple cinnamon, orange cream or double chocolate pecan. Men, don’t think the tea shop is just for the ladies; the meals are hearty enough to fill the hungry too.
Their chicken salad is an all-time favorite either on a sandwich, salad jumble plate (with a large scoop of chicken salad, a scone, two side salads and crackers!), or on the chicken salad salad plate!
Quiche is homemade as are all other foods at Burdett’s; side salads include five-cup fruit salad, pasta salad, garden salad, broccoli salad, Waldorf salad, and frozen strawberry salad. Every one is delicious!
June 9th needs to be circled on your calendar for the fun-filled foray to Springfield. I’ll see you there!
