Campbell Crossing pursues New Ways to Reduce Energy Costs

Campbell CrossingFort Campbell, KY – Campbell Crossing, recognized for its innovative ways to reduce energy consumption in homes without sacrificing family comfort and life-style, has entered into an agreement with E3 Greentech Enterprises to deploy a new technology that will help Soldiers and their families save energy in their homes.

This cutting edge service will be installed in more than 600 Campbell Crossing all-electric homes at Fort Campbell by the end of 2012.

“We work very hard to identify ways to not only operate in a more sustainable fashion, but to help the Service Members and their families reduce energy usage and save money,” said Danny Roberts, Campbell Crossing Utilities Manager. “We are excited to provide this new service which does both.”

Campbell Crossing and E3 Greentech Enterprises, an Atlanta based veteran owned company, began testing this service in the fall of 2010 in 20 residences as a pilot project to validate system performance. The service, known as NexGEMS TM, has successfully demonstrated the ability to reduce electric consumption by 7-10% while not requiring a change of lifestyle or a reduction of overall comfort in the home. The focus of this next phase of the project is to expand the service to two communities in order to validate system performance on a large scale before deciding to install the equipment in all 4,457 Campbell Crossing houses.

The installation of the service is going to be accomplished by Home Energy Concepts Corporation, of McMinnville, Tennessee, which is also a veteran owned corporation. Home Energy Concepts Corp is an Energy Star provider that has certified thousands of Energy Star homes at Fort Campbell.

“This is a proud day for E3 Greentech” said Ed Smith, CEO and Founder of E3 Greentech. “As a veteran owned company, we take special pride in being awarded the contract for the expansion of our Next Generation managed energy services at Fort Campbell. I firmly believe that this is just the first step of many that Campbell Crossing and E3 will travel together in providing sustainable, high efficiency solutions enhancing the quality of life for those families living in Fort Campbell communities”.

The NexGEMSTM service consists of a number of physical devices that are installed in the houses which in turn communicate with a specially designed software system. The installed devices include a Gateway, or pc-like wireless device, a special thermostat that is used to operate the unit’s heating and cooling system, and a device that is also connected to the electric hot water tank. The Gateway acts as the connection and management ‘computer’ between the devices installed in the house and E3 enterprise service over a high speed broadband connection.

Information collected from these devices is used to understand the thermal characteristics of the house in the constantly changing weather conditions, how well the heating and cooling system is able to deliver the desired comfort levels in the home, and can also detect changes in the performance of the system as it works to either heat or cool the home that need to be addressed. Likewise the service can tell how well the electric water heater is working.

This also allows the residents to access and view key aspects of the service as well as receive important communication from Campbell Crossing.

E3 Greentech Enterprises has spent 3 years developing and testing their NexGEMS TM service. The service has been piloted in homes in 4 geographic areas, including Charlottesville Virginia, Indianapolis, and Lafayette Tennessee as well as at Fort Campbell.

This technology will also help Campbell Crossing and Lend Lease reach their Better Building Challenge (BBC) goal of reducing energy consumption by 20% over the next 5 years. The Better Buildings Challenge is an energy-efficiency program developed to create jobs, save money, reduce our country’s dependence on foreign oil and make our air cleaner.

The BBC aims to support the administration’s goal of helping businesses save nearly $40 billion annually in energy costs, enabling them to grow, invest in new technology, and create American jobs through these retrofit programs. Investing in innovative clean energy technologies that make America’s commercial buildings more efficient will put Americans to work and save money by saving energy.
