Clarksville Parks and Recreation Report for July 8th, 2012

Clarksville Parks and RecreationClarksville, TN – The weekly Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department Recreation Report provides Clarksvillians with a glimpse at the activities and events that are available from the Parks and Recreation Department for them to enjoy together as a family.

Billy Dunlop Park will be closed to the public July 9th-13th for Boy Scouts Camp and July 16th-20th for Girl Scouts Camp.

This weeks highlights include:

  • “The Help” Wins People’s Choice
  • Summer Youth Program comes to a close
  • Acoustic Night at Jammin’ in the Alley
  • Zumba begins August 2nd

The Mayor’s Summer Night Lights

Beat the summertime blues this year! The City of Clarksville Parks & Recreation Department along with Manna Café, L.E.A.P. Organization, Workforce Essentials, Miller-Motte Technical College, BFS Insurance, DBS & Associates Engineering, S.A.T.

Entertainment, and Coca-Cola® will be offering extended hours and lots of great activities at two Parks & Recreation facilities as a part of the Mayor’s Summer Night Lights program. Summer Night Lights is free and open to youth and families of all ages.

Summer Night Lights features two locations of summer fun, the Kleeman Community Center and the Burt-Cobb Community Center coupled with Dixon Park. Festivities at the Kleeman Community Center occur every Thursday from 6:00pm to 9:30pm and include basketball games, fitness classes, organized games and more!

The Burt-Cobb/Dixon Park site, located at 1101 Franklin Street and 117 South 10th Street, offer outdoor basketball games, other organized games and more, each Friday evening from 6:00pm to 10:30pm.

Summer Night Lights takes place weekly, through Friday, August 3rd.

“The Help” Wins People’s Choice

Movies in the ParkThe ballots have been counted and the winner of this year’s “people’s choice” movie is “The Help”- rated PG-13. The movie will begin at dusk at Movies in the Park at Heritage Park soccer fields, Saturday, July 21st.

Come early to save your spot and check out “move before the movies” which will feature a walk in the park and Tae Kwon Do. Admission to the movie is free. Follow us on facebook to find out exactly what time the movie will begin! Thank you to all who voted!

Summer Youth Program comes to a close

Summer Youth ProgramThe City of Clarksville Parks & Recreation Department’s six-week Summer Youth Program will come to an end Friday, July 13th. The day-camp type program which is offered each summer to youth ages 6 to 16 at no cost will end the program with a free outdoor movie showing of “Happy Feet 2” at Heritage Park, July 13th from 6:00pm to 10:00pm.

Prior to the end of program movie showing, The Roxy Regional Theatre’s Summer Playhouse will hold a special performance July 12th from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at the Roxy where participants will be able to show off their dance and improvisation skills they have mastered over the course of the theatre workshop.

Acoustic Night at Jammin’ in the Alley

Jammin in the AlleyThe City of Clarksville and U.S. Bank will soon be jammin’ once again, Friday, July 20th in downtown Clarksville’s Strawberry Alley. This month’s free concert will feature a medley of acoustic artists to include Michael Jacobs, Lydia Walker, Rebecca Forehand, Freight Train, and Dustin Overbeek. Free concerts take place every third Friday of the month thru October and begin at 7:00pm.

In addition to the live music and market vendors, downtown restaurants will offer outdoor dining for Jammin’ in the Alley and night market patrons. Come ready to eat, dance and shop!

Zumba begins August 2nd

ZumbaThis popular program combines music and dance in an effort to make exercise fun! Classes return to the Crow Community Center August 2nd and meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30pm to 6:30pm.

The cost for the entire 6-week program is $30.00, or $3.00 per class.
