Nashville Sounds Baseball
Nashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds split a doubleheader against the Albuquerque Isotopes on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium to wrap up a rain-shortened series. The Sounds won the exciting opener, 2-1, and dropped a heart-breaking twinbill finale, 8-5.
Albuquerque took two of three from the Sounds in the rain-shortened series. Nashville split a doubleheader for the fifth time in 2012 and moved to 5-7 overall in doubleheader action.
In the opener, Logan Schafer belted a pair of homers, including a walkoff blast in the seventh inning, to power the Sounds to a 2-1 victory.
Schafer, who leads Nashville with nine roundtrippers on the year, drove left-hander Wil Ledezma’s 1-2 offering over the center field wall as he led off the home half of the seventh to give the Sounds (41-52) their 12th last at-bat victory of the year. His 2-for-4 effort marked the outfielder’s team-leading 23rd multi-hit game of the year but only his first in his last 13 contests. It was the fourth two-homer game by a Nashville batter in 2012 (second by Schafer).
Schafer also made a key outfield assist, cutting down the potential go-ahead run at the plate in the fourth inning.
Caleb Gindl (2-for-3) and Jordan Brown (2-for-2) joined Schafer with multi-hit efforts for Nashville.
Mike McClendon (4-3) was the beneficiary of Schafer’s late heroics, picking up the victory after working one hitless inning and striking out two batters.
Sounds starting pitcher Wily Peralta successfully worked out of early jams, stranding six Albuquerque baserunners over the first three frames including fanning Tim Federowicz to leave the bags jammed in the third.
Schafer gave the Sounds a 1-0 lead in the third when he belted a one-out solo homer to right off Isotopes starter Will Savage.
Peralta was unable to escape another jam as Albuquerque knotted the score in the top of the fourth. After the Isotopes loaded the bases on a walk and a pair of bunts, ex-Sound Trent Oeltjen ripped a single to center, which plated Matt Angle with the tying run. Brian Cavazos-Galvez also attempted to score on the play but was thrown out at the plate by Schafer.
The Sounds had a chance to pull ahead in the sixth after placing runners on second and third with only one out, but Ledezma rebounded to strike out Dayton Buller and induce an inning-ending groundout from pinch-hitter Andy Gonzalez to escape the jam unscathed.
Albuquerque scored eight-unanswered runs to hand the Nashville Sounds an 8-5 defeat in the twinbill.
With Nashville leading 5-0 entering the sixth, the Isotopes sent 12 hitters to the plate against four Sounds pitchers, which included breaking up Claudio Vargas’ no-hit bid.
The five-run blown lead set a new season-high for the Sounds. The previous high was three runs on April 22nd at the Omaha Storm Chasers. The eight-run rally by Albuquerque set a season-high for runs scored in an inning.
Every Sounds position player recorded a hit while Caleb Gindl went 2-for-3 with a homer, RBI, walk, and two runs scored. Corey Patterson also added two hits.
Nashville quickly took a 2-0 lead in the opening frame of the twinbill nightcap, beginning with three consecutive singles by Schafer, Maysonet, and Gindl.
Schafer scored the first run on a wild pitch, followed by third baseman Andy Gonzalez hitting a deep sacrifice fly to center field to score Maysonet.
Gindl’s seventh deep fly of the year extended the Sounds’ lead to 3-0 in the third, a leadoff, opposite-field homer that barely landed over the left field wall.
Nashville added their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-0 advantage. Gindl got things started with a leadoff walk, moved to second on a Gonzalez single, and scored on a Taylor Green RBI liner up the middle. Halton followed with sacrifice fly that landed inches from left field wall to score Gonzalez.
Vargas didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning when Ozzie Martinez hit a weak infield-dribbler past Vargas to the second baseman. Albuquerque followed with a Brian Cavazos-Galvez single and two-run double by former Sound Trent Oeltjen.
Donovan Hand entered the game in relief and walked Alex Castellanos before surrendering consecutive RBI singles to Josh Fields and Josh Bard.
Albuquerque went ahead as Tyler Henson singled through a drawn-in infield. Cavazos-Galvez capped the rally with a two-run double.
The Sounds threatened in the bottom of the seven after hits from Halton and Patterson, but stranded the tying-run at the plate.
Vargas gave up three runs on three hits while matching a season-high six strikeouts in five plus innings for a no-decision. The runs given up by the 33-year-old in the sixth snapped a scoreless streak of 13 consecutive innings over his last three starts leading back to the second inning on July 1st vs. Iowa Cubs.
Hand (1-1) was charged with three runs on two hits in 1/3 of an inning, snapping season-high streak of 12 straight outings (20.2) dating back to June 2nd. Perez gave up a run and allowed both of his inherited runners to score.
Jim Henderson was charged with one run while recording the final two outs of the eight-run rally. Robert Wooten struck out two over a scoreless inning.
In his first Triple-A start for the Isotopes, right-hander Blake Johnson allowed three runs on six hits while fanning five in 3 2/3 innings for a no-decision. Ramon Troncoso (3-0) backed into the win with two runs in 1 1/3 innings, Angel Guzman ended the game with a scoreless inning for his first save of the season.
The Sounds continue their homestand on Monday when they welcome the Round Rock Express (AAA-Rangers) to town for the 7:05pm opener of a four-game series. Right-hander Mark Rogers (4-6, 5.18) will man the bump for Nashville to face a yet to be determined starter for Round Rock, which suffered a rainout on Sunday night.
