APSU’s IB5 Quintet earns third place at Calvin Smith Festival

The APSU Music DepartmentClarksville, TN – Last weekend, Austin Peay State University’s IB5 Brass Quintet traveled east to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where the group placed third at the Calvin Smith Festival and Brass Quintet Competition.

The festival was held in memory of Calvin Smith, a former horn professor at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, who passed away last year.

The IB5 Brass Quintet competed with other quintets from across the country, including groups from Kentucky, Georgia and New York. After two rounds of competition, the APSU quintet placed in the top three groups and received a $500.00 prize.

Along with competing, IB5 performed in a mass brass choir that premiered a piece written in memory of Calvin Smith. The quintet also participated in a master class with world-renowned horn player Bernhard Scully, member of the Summit Brass and horn professor at the University of Illinois.

The members of IB5 include John Glenn-Hoekstra and Heather Glenn-Hoekstra, trumpets; Brandon Reynolds, horn; William Hoekstra, trombone; and Greg Johnston, tuba.

After earning third place, the quintet thanked their coach, APSU adjunct professor of music Dr. Chris Vivio, for encouraging them to compete and spending hours preparing them for the festival.
