Nashville Sounds lose 4-3 to Memphis Redbirds in 10th Inning

Nashville Sounds Baseball

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Memphis Redbirds plated three runs in the top of the tenth inning and withstood a Nashville rally in the bottom of the frame to hang a 4-3 loss on the Sounds on Friday evening at Greer Stadium in the finale of a four-game series.

With the one-run defeat, the Sounds (48-58) missed an opportunity to record a sweep of their cross-state rivals as they fell to 4-5 in extra-inning action on the year.

In the Memphis tenth, pinch-hitter Cedric Hunter drew a one-out walk from Rob Wooten (0-1) and later scored the winning run on Matt Adams’ bases-loaded single to right. Eugenio Velez gave the visitors some breathing room when he delivered a two-run single to right to extend the lead to 4-1.

Nashville didn’t go down without a fight against Memphis closer Eduardo Sanchez in the bottom of the tenth. The Sounds placed runners on second and third with one out before Corey Patterson ripped a two-run double to right to reduce the deficit to 4-3. After Sanchez struck out Eric Farris for the second out, left-hander John Gaub took over on the Memphis hill and struck out Caleb Gindl to secure the victory and record his first save of the year.

Donovan Hand made a spot start for Nashville after Mark Rogers was scratched less than an hour before game time and performed well. The right-hander took a no-decision after allowing one run on four hits while striking out three in his five innings of work. In three spot starts this season, Hand has posted a 2.08 ERA (3er/13.0ip).

Hand got some early help from his defense as he escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the second inning when he induced Pete Kozma to hit a double-play grounder to second.

Memphis broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth when Ryan Jackson led off with a single and later scored on a groundout.

Nashville rallied to tie the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth against Memphis starter Brandon Dickson. Logan Schafer led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Jeff Bianchi before racing around to score on pinch-hitter Jordan Brown’s two-out single to right.

Dickson took a no-decision after working a solid outing for the Redbirds. The right-hander allowed one run on six hits over 7 2/3 frames of action, fanning six.

Both teams put runners on third with one out in the ninth but neither team scored. Velez doubled for Memphis before Wooten got out of the jam by inducing three straight groundouts by the Redbirds. For the Sounds, Farris ripped a leadoff double to left off Sam Freeman and advanced to third on a groundout but was stranded as Taylor Green struck out and Logan Schafer flew out.

Farris’ ninth-inning double extended the infielder’s longest hitting streak of the year to 10 games, the Sounds’ second double-digit streak of the year (Brooks Conrad, 16).

The Sounds continue their homestand on Saturday evening by welcoming the Albuquerque Isotopes (AAA-Los Angeles Dodgers) to town for the 6:35pm opener of a five-game series. Right-hander Brian Baker (2-3, 4.91) will man the bump for Nashville to face Albuquerque right-hander John Ely (9-7, 3.34).
