Lone Oak Picnic brings the Community Together
There was a large crowd throughout the day. At one time there were over 500 people socializing and enjoying some great food. Many were there to here the candidates in this years elections speak. At noon, 14 Federal, State and local candidates gave speeches to the attentive crowd. ![]() The Back Lot Pickers, Donald Greene and Lucian Greene, along with Jimmy Meek played at the 104th Annual Lone Oak Picnic. For this years event, the Central Civitan prepared 5 whole hogs, 34 shoulders and 75 chickens all cooked in the BBQ pits near the Civitan building. BBQ was served all day from the pit to your plate. I sampled some of the BBQ right off the pit and it was some of the best I have ever had. By noon, all of the chickens had been sold and they were down to the last hog and shoulder. In comparison, last year the Civitan cooked 4 hogs, 24 shoulders and 50 chicken. Just goes to show how much the event grows year to year. Boy Scout Troop 546 was selling Funnel Cakes as a fundraiser to raise money for the troop. For the children, there were inflatables, a train to ride and face painting. There was a car show featuring cars from the Memory Lane Cruisers car club. Crowds gathered to admire the different cars and to talk shop. “We had great weather and a great crowd at this year’s event,” state Civitan member Larry Pitts. “A lot of folks came out to support the Civitan and to listen to the candidates. I hope to see everyone back next year.” The Lone Oak Picnic is always a great time for the community. Everyone comes out to talk with neighbors, family and friends while listening to music and enjoying some fine BBQ. It’s also a good time to learn about the issues facing the community. They also fund scholarships for and support many educational and extra-curricular activities of the students, teachers and staff at Montgomery Central High School, Middle School and Elementary School as well as Cumberland Heights Elementary School. The Lone Oak Picnic is held the last Saturday in July every year. Mark it on your calendars. This is one event you don’t want to miss. Lone Oak Picnic – Larry Pitts
