Austin Peay Governors Football shows aggressiveness in first full-pad practice

APSU Sports: Austin Peay Football

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – An unseasonably cool morning was exactly what the Austin Peay State University coaches and players needed on the Governors first practice in full pads.

With temperatures resting in the upper 70s, the Governors raised the heat with an inspired physical practice.

“I thought tempo-wise it was really a good morning,” APSU Football coach Rick Christophel said. “I believe they understand tempo of the game. If we can get them all to buy into that tempo, we will have a chance.”

“We have to learn to be smart. We got a few guys banged up. Hopefully, they won’t be out long. Overall, though, I was pleased.”

The Governors are going to be tested in the next few days. After a 24-hour respite, APSU will have its first two-a-day session Saturday, with a padded practice in the morning. After a kicking-game, shorts-only practice on Sunday, the Governors will have their first scrimmage, Monday morning.

“We have to be consistent out there with our focus, with our effort,” Christophel said. “That is what you are looking for.

“The good thing is we will have a 24-hour break from practice (Friday to Saturday)-the only other thing we will be doing is meeting-so that will get them off their feet as far as anything to do with intensity.”

Depth in most positions continues to be a Govs’ strong suit. Despite some bumps and bruises in the secondary, the Governors were able to move players around to continue flourishing in that area.

The wide receiver competition continues to intensify in areas other than the X-position (Devin Stark).  Linebacker and defensive line battles also continue to manifest.

“The great thing right now is we are in a position with our depth is we might be able to redshirt 8 to 10 of these freshmen,” Christophel said. “We would love to in that position.”
