Tennessee Titans Flashback: Chris Johnson Goes for 2000 yards

January 3rd, 2010: Titans 17, Seahawks 13

Tennessee TitansNashville, TN – Each week this season, Titans Online is taking a look back at a game in franchise history against the upcoming opponent.

Chris Johnson burst to the forefront in his second year when he became the sixth player in NFL history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season, shattered the league’s yards from scrimmage record and passed Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell for the best rushing season in Titans/Oilers franchise history.

Johnson carried the ball 36 times for 134 yards and caught three passes for 20 yards to finish the season with 2,006 rushing yards and 503 receiving yards on 50 catches. The 2,509 yards from scrimmage broke the record of 2,429 scrimmage yards set by Marshall Faulk in 1999.

Johnson’s chase for Eric Dickerson all-time best mark of 2,105 rushing yards was thwarted when a holding penalty negated a 62-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. He settled for scoring the first and last touchdowns of the game and breaking Campbell’s mark of 1,934 yards for the Oilers in the 1980 season.

Matt Hasselbeck, who was then with the Seahawks, tried to lead Seattle to a comeback victory, but Titans linebacker Gerald McRath intercepted Haselbeck deep in Tennessee territory with 1:19 remaining.
