Burgos Hurls Another Quality Start, Dillard Ties Franchise Wins Record For Nashville
Nashville, TN – Jordan Brown’s two-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Nashville Sounds a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.
Brown’s game-winning knock, which plated Eric Farris from second and came against reliever Bobby LaFromboise (4-2), completed a three-run rally for Nashville, which trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh. It was the Sounds’ 21st last at-bat victory of the year and their 13th win when trailing in the seventh inning or later.
Reliever Tim Dillard (1-1) was the beneficiary of the late rally and picked up his 35th victory as a Sound, matching Keith Brown’s franchise record. Dillard worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings in the contest.
The Sounds (57-67) have scored the winning run in their final turn at the plate in seven of their last nine victories.
Nashville starter Hiram Burgos tossed his third quality start in four Triple-A outings but took a no-decision. The right-hander allowed two runs in seven innings, striking out eight batters. He departed on the short end of a 2-0 deficit before a late Sounds rally.
Tacoma took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with three consecutive one-out singles off Burgos. Carlos Peguero, who recorded the Rainiers’ lone multi-hit effort with a 2-for-4 evening, and Luis Rodriguez got things started with back-to-back knocks to put runners on the corners before Vinnie Catricala put the visitors on the board with an RBI single to right.
Burgos escaped a no-out bases-loaded jam in the fourth to keep the deficit at one. After the Rainiers jammed the bags on a walk, single, and hit batsman, the Nashville right-hander popped up Catricala before striking out Carlos Triunfel and Brandon Bartz in succession to quell the threat.
The Rainiers doubled their lead to 2-0 in the top of the seventh when Nick Franklin plated Ford with a two-out RBI single to center off Burgos.
Nashville got a run back in the home half of the seventh but also left runners stranded at second and third in the frame.
With one out, Logan Schafer, Edwin Maysonet, and Dayton Buller recorded three straight singles off Rainiers reliever David Pauley, the last of which made it a 2-1 contest and extended the Sounds’ backstop’s season-best hitting streak to four games. After the runners advanced to second and third on a groundout, Pauley struck out Caleb Gindl to escape the jam with the one-run lead intact.
The red-hot Davis — who has hit safely in 26 of his last 28 contests — tied the game in the eighth when he led off the bottom of the inning with solo homer to center field that cleared the 24-foot high batter’s eye. The blast, which came against Pauley, was his third as a Sound and snapped Nashville’s six-game home run drought at 224 plate appearances.
The Sounds stranded runners at second and third for the second straight frame later in the eighth. Brown followed Davis’ blast with a single that chased Pauley from the contest and moved to third on Schafer’s two-out double off LaFromboise before the right-hander induced an inning-ending groundout from Maysonet.
The teams continue the series with another 7:05pm meeting on Wednesday night. Right-hander Claudio Vargas (5-1, 3.64) — who leads the PCL with a 0.64 ERA in August — will man the bump for the Sounds and face Tacoma right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (4-3, 3.44).
