Austin Peay Governors Basketball wins exhibition game against Seneca College 79-71

APSU Sports: Austin Peay Men’s Basketball

Austin Peay State University GovernorsToronto, Ontario – Freshman guard AJ Lynch knocked down back-to-back fourth-quarter three pointers to break open a tight game as Austin Peay State University defeated Seneca College, 79-71, Saturday in the first of three Governors’ Canadian exhibition games.

With the Govs permitting all but one point of a double-digit lead slip away, Lynch connected on two straight right-corner three pointers to allow the Governors to regain control in the game’s final three minutes. This time Seneca’s Vadim Hamilov, a one-man wrecking crew, couldn’t answer.

Lynch finished with 17 points, 14 coming in the fourth quarter—he hit four three pointers in the period to go with a deuce. He finished the game 6-of-10 from the floor.

The Mobile, AL, native was one of three players to score in double figures. Junior forward Will Triggs led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Triggs came up big, in particular, in the second quarter as the Govs erased a 17-point, 29-12 deficit. The Edwardsville, IL, native dominated inside, scoring 11 points to spur APSU to a 38-37 halftime lead.

Sophomore guard Herdie Lawrence was APSU’s other double-figure scorer with 12 points.

APSU connected on 50 percent (14 of 28) second-half field goals, 45.9 percent (27 of 59). A notoriously poor free-throw shooting team in recent years, Austin Peay made 17 of 20 (85 percent) at the line.

Hamilov led all scorers with 29 points, including six three pointers—he had three in the fourth quarter.

The Govs will return to action, 2:00pm, Sunday with a contest against A-Game Hoops, which beat Tulsa, 102-92, Saturday.
