Lipscomb (2-2-0) was on the attack early, putting the Lady Govs defense on its heels for much of the first half. The Lady Bisons strategy of long balls to the forwards put a strain on the Austin Peay (2-2-0) backline and tested Lady Govs keeper Haylee Shoaff.

The Lady Bisons broke through in the 38th minute. A Leah Wood corner kick curled around Shoaff for an unusual opening goal to the match.

“Giving up an early goal again really took the wind out of our sails,” said head coach Kelley Guth. “We got the group together and refocused at half time. We did a much better job in the second half.”

Tatiana ArizaAustin Peay’s offense was held to two first-half shots, one each from Tatiana Ariza and Stephanie Weider.

After halftime, the Lady Govs offense came to life, but was turned away on multiple occasions by the Lipscomb defense. Austin Peay attempted 13 shots in the second half, putting five on net. Junior Tatiana Ariza attempted five shots, while classmate Andy Quiceno attempted three and put one on goal.

“We created opportunities to be dangerous in the second half,” Guth said. “Lipscomb defended us very well tonight. We just have to capitalize on the opportunities we get and control the ball better.”

Andy QuicenoEarly in the second half, an Austin Peay breakaway led to back-to-back shots on net by senior Emily Perkins and junior Andy Quiceno. Lipscomb’s Erin Zerio turned away both attempts, and the Lady Govs were unable to capitalize on the resulting corner kick.

Austin Peay’s defense stifled the Lady Bisons offense in the second half, limiting the visitors to one shot attempt.

Shoaff made three saves in the first half. Freshman Nikki Filippone entered at halftime and made one stop in the second half. Lipscomb’s Zerio finished with six saves.

The Lady Govs will have to shake this loss off in a hurry, with a pair of weekend matches looming. Austin Peay hosts Gonzaga 7:00pm, Friday, before concluding the four-game home stand against Chattanooga at 2:00pm, Sunday.
