Nashville Sounds Drop Season Finale to Memphis Redbirds, 2-1

Hiram Burgos Hurls Another Quality Start, Sean Halton Homers for Nashville

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds closed out their 2012 season with a 2-1 loss to the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds in a Labor Day matinee in front of 3,599 fans at Greer Stadium.

The Memphis win completed the Redbirds’ four-game sweep of the Sounds, marking the fourth time that Nashville was swept in a series this season.

Nashvile (67-77), which went 4-4 on its season-ending homestand after sweeping the Iowa Cubs during the first of the two series, finished the season with just the 13th losing record in the club’s 35-year history.

Three Memphis hurlers held Nashville to only two hits in the contest, a second-inning Sean Halton homer and a third-inning Logan Schafer single. The Redbirds retired the final 19 Sounds batters in a row following Schafer’s single.

Right-hander Hiram Burgos continued his strong season with another quality start for the Sounds, scattering five hits over six scoreless frames. He departed with a 1-0 lead but took a no-decision following a blown save by the bullpen.

With the effort, Burgos lowered his organization-leading ERA to 1.95 (37er/171.0ip) in 28 minor league outings. He twirled six quality starts in his eight outings for Nashville, posting a 2.91 ERA at the Triple-A level.

Memphis starter John Gast (9-5) matched Burgos’ quality start effort with one of his own, picking up the victory after holding the Sounds to one run on two hits over seven innings of action.

Halton — the 2012 Nashville team MVP — gave the Sounds a 1-0 lead when he led off the bottom of the second inning with his team-leading 17th home run of the year, a solo shot off Memphis starter John Gast.

Nashville third baseman Andy Gonzalez kept the one-run lead intact in the fourth inning when, with runners on second and third and one out, he fielded a Jose Garcia grounder and fired plateward to cut down Brock Peterson, who had opened the inning with a single.

Immediately following Burgos’ departure, Memphis rallied for a pair of runs against Amaury Rivas in the top of the seventh inning to grab a 2-1 lead.

With one out, Gast singled and moved to third on an Adron Chambers double to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Ryan Jackson slapped a game-tying groundout to second to plate Gast before Steven Hill put the visitors on top with a two-out RBI single to left.

Rivas (5-8) drew the loss for the Sounds after giving up a pair of runs in his lone frame of work.

Jorge Rondon worked 1 1/3 perfect innings of relief for Memphis, striking out three of his four batters faced, before Barrett Browning closed out the victory by retiring the final two Sounds hitters to notch his first save of the year.

Baseball returns to Greer Stadium in April 2013 when the Sounds begin their 36th season of competition. Season tickets are available now by calling 615.690.HITS or visiting the Greer Stadium box office.
