Austin Peay State University Lady GovsLedbetter, KY – Hoping to build on one of its best tournament scores in program history, Austin Peay State University women’s golf team will travel a short distance into Kentucky, Monday and Tuesday, to participate in the fourth annual Drake Creek Invitational at the Drake Creek Golf Club in Ledbetter, KY.

The two-day, 54-hole event will see 36 holes played on Monday and 18 on Tuesday on the par-72, 6,178-yard layout.

The Lady Govs are coming off a 935 total at GolfWeek Program Challenge, the third lowest score in school history. The Lady Govs fired a final-round 306, the Lady Govs’ lowest round since Fall 2010.

In addition to host Murray State and the Lady Govs, two other Ohio Valley Conference schools will be participating in the event-Belmont and Tennessee State. In addition, three Missouri Valley Conference teams also will be in the 11-team field-Drake Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois. Rounding out the field are: Arkansas State, Central Arkansas, Columbia and Jackson State.

Lauren Bond [2]“Caledonia was an extremely beautiful but difficult golf course,” APSU interim coach Chelsea Harris said. “I think we should be very well prepared for Drakes Creek. I think it will be a little easier golf course and am expecting little lower scores.

“I expect them to play a little better because the course is a little more open and the fairways are a little bigger, but at the same time our expectations need to be realistic.”

The Lady Govs will take three seniors, one junior and one freshman to represent the Lady Govs. Seniors Lauren Bond and Tabitha Beard along with freshman Jessica Cathey earned exemptions for the tournament after their solid play in South Carolina.

Holly Batey [3]Senior Holly Batey and junior Tala Mumford earned their berths through a two-day qualifier this week. Sophomore Meghan Mueller will play as an individual. Junior Rachel Deaton will sit out this tournament recovering from illness.

Harris would love to see a repeat from South Carolina.

“I think they were really motivated,” she said. “I think they were excited to be playing one of the Top 10 courses in the country. With it being the first tournament of the year, they were excited to get going.

“After that first tournament, I think they are excited about getting back out there and seeing if they can build on what they did.”
