Tennessee Titans lose to the San Diego Chargers 38-10

Tennessee TitansSan Diego, CA – Antonio Gates may have been sidelined with sore ribs, but that did not slow the San Diego Chargers Sunday. Dante Rosario stepped in and had a career day fueling the Chargers to a 38-10 win over the Tennessee Titans.

Rosario scored twice in the first quarter. The first on a 11 yard pass from Philip Rivers and the second on a 4 yard pass. This put the Chargers up 14-0 over the Titans. Rosario ended the day catching four passes for 48 yards and three touchdowns.

Rivers was 24 of 32 passing for 284 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Jackie Battle had 69 yards and two touchdowns for the Bolts on 14 attempts. One of the touchdowns came when Battle dove over the the pile from the one yard line to give the Chargers a 31-10 lead in the fourth.

The Titans had a rough day of it all around. The Chargers defense gave Jake Locker problems all afternoon. On the Titans third play of the game, Shawn Phillips hit Locker as he was throwing the ball that resulted in an interception by Eric Weddle. San Diego turned the turnover into a touchdown six plays later on a 4 yard pass to Rosario.

In the second quarter, the Titans were finally able to put some points on the board when Rob Bironas hit a 23 yard field goal to make it at 17-3 game. The field goal extended Bironas’ streak to 18 made field goals tying him with Al Del Creco for fifth best streak in francise history.

The Chargers defense was able to hold Chris Johnson to 17 yards on 8 carries. Johnson had just 4 yards on 11 carries last week against the New England Patriots.

Late in the third quarter, right after the Chargers scored to make it a 24-3 game, Lavelle Hawkins returned the kickoff 71 yards to setup Tennessee’s only touchdown. Locker threw a 15 yard pass to Kendall Wright for the score to make it 24-10.

Locker ended the day 15 of 30 passing for 174 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Locker also ran twice for 21 yards. One of the runs was for 20 yards setting a new career long for Locker.

Damian Williams caught four passes for 45 yards. Tight end Craig Stevens caught a 46 yard pass from Locker. Kendall Wright caught two passes for 24 yards. Kenny Britt’s playing time was limited by the Titans as he had one reception for 5 yards.

Bironas’ 23-yard field goal extended another streak of his. It marked his 12th consecutive game with a field goal, which is tied (Bironas in 2008, Gary Anderson in 2003, Al Del Greco in 1998) for the third-longest streak in franchise history.

In the second quarter, cornerback Alterraun Verner recorded his fifth career interception, picking off a Philip Rivers pass intended for Malcom Floyd.

Late in the second quarter, Derrick Morgan recorded his fifth career sack, taking down Philip Rivers for a five-yard loss on third down.

The Titans recorded three sacks in the first half, getting one from Mike Martin, Derrick Morgan and Will Witherspoon. It was their highest sack total in a half since getting five in the first half at Dallas on October 10th, 2010.

The win puts the San Diego Chargers at 2-0 for the season. The Tennessee Titans are now 0-2 on the year. This is San Diego’s ninth consecutive win over Tennessee.

The Tennessee Titans next game is Sunday, September 23rd at LP Field against the Detriot Lions (1-1) who lost Lions lost Sunday night to the San Francisco 49ers 27-19. Kickoff is at 12:00pm CDT.
