Clarksville, TN – Over the past couple of months, especially after heavy rains, a significant amount of mud and brick has been accumulating in the collection system and at the waste water treatment plant.
Clarksville Gas and Water has continuously worked to find the source of the debris.
In order to assess the full extent of the collapse, the road was closed and excavated.
Further investigation revealed that the brick combined storm water and sewer line was no longer intact and that a large void had opened beneath the road due to soil erosion caused by the recent heavy rains. The Clarksville Gas and Water Department and the Clarksville Street Department worked together to remove the collapse and stabilize the trench. Due to the amount of damage and the multiple steps in a complete repair, the road will remain closed for a few more weeks.
“I really appreciate the efforts put forward by Clarksville Gas and Water employees to locate the source of the problem and for their diligence in working to alleviate any further damage. The collapsed combined storm water and sewer line, soil erosion and the resulting effect on the road could have eventually caused a significant safety issue,” said Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan.
“Clarksville Gas and Water and our Street Department have done a good job with this temporary fix. However, we are moving toward a permanent solution to ensure the safety of the road and the effectiveness of the combined storm water and sewer system and also increase the size of the pipe to handle storm water runoff.” stated McMillan.
The full repair will require the replacement of the brick combined storm water and sewer line along College Street between North First Street and Spring Street. Once the line is replaced the Tennessee Department of Transportation will repave the area. Until then, sections of College, North First and Spring Streets will remain closed for safety reasons.
