City of Clarksville and Community Partners join together for “Operation Serve”

City of ClarksvilleClarksville, TN – Grace Community Church is partnering with the City of Clarksville’s Office of Housing and Community Development for the seventh consecutive year on a project the church calls “Operation Serve.”

This year’s event will take place on Saturday, September 29th and focuses on minor and major housing rehabilitation projects for ten houses within the city. Repairs will include roof replacements, structural repairs, wheelchair ramps, HVAC replacement, painting, and yard cleanup.

Over a one thousand volunteers from Grace Community Church will embark on their annual quest to bring this much needed help to the community. Three hundred of the volunteers will be participating in the Extreme Neighborhood Makeover, providing general clean-up for a neighborhood.

All materials are paid for by a grant through the City’s Community Development Block Grant program, funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Some of the organizational and carpentry skills will also be donated by local contractors and businesses are investing in the Clarksville community by taking part in this event.

The houses selected for the project are on an approved waiting list maintained by the Office of Housing and Community Development. Director Keith D. Lampkin, “This partnership allows our office to get the maximum use of our grant funds, and reduce the number of families on our waiting list.” The project will use an estimated $74,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.

“This is a great partnership for Grace Community Church, the City of Clarksville, and the community as a whole,” said Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan, “and it shows the true nature of Clarksvillians and the difference we can make by working together. I appreciate everyone who is volunteering their time, efforts and talents to this project as we move toward affordable and safe housing for Clarksville’s families.”
