Austin Peay Governors Golf makes run at WKU Kenny Perry Invitational, finish third

APSU Sports: Austin Peay Men’s Golf

Austin Peay State University GovernorsBowling Green, KY – Austin Peay State University Men’s golf team made a strong run at the WKU Kenny Perry Invitational title, Tuesday.

In fact, because of the way the tourney was orchestrated, the Governors knew they could win the tournament if they finished the final three holes at even par. But the final three holes at the Club at Olde Stone played extremely difficult-as it they had all week-and the Govs ended in third place, shooting a three-day 933, leaving them five shots behind champion Jacksonville State and three behind second-place Louisville (930).

But the Govs finished with the day’s low round 303, cutting 11 shots off their deficit.

“It was a little weird on how it was set up,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “Some of the teams started earlier than others because they had flights out. They had the three leading teams (Jacksonville State, Louisville and Akron) actually start ahead of us on the back nine.

“We really made a run at it-we really started out well. We had the lead going into the last three holes. But with the difficulty of 16, 17 and 18, the pin placement and the fast greens, it was just going to be real difficult.”

Anthony BradleyKayden, however, could not have been more encouraged with this team’s ability to bounce back Tuesday after giving up several strokes late Monday, falling 15 shots behind.

“The guys knew they had a tough task at hand today but they went out and really played well,” Kayden said.” They worked hard all day and I was impressed with their courage they displayed.

“It was a heckuva effort. They made up 11 of 16 shots. I know this, they are mentally drained.”

Dustin KorteJunior Anthony Bradley finished in a third-place tie after carding a 75 for a three-day 229. However, freshman Austin Kramer had the Govs’ best round, shooting a 2-over 74. Senior Dustin Korte had his tourney’s best round with a 76 while junior Marco Iten recorded a 78. Korte and Iten, who each finished at 236, tied for 10th.

“Anthony played really solid golf this week,” Kayden said. “We got a real lift from Austin (Kramer). He had a double on No. 17, but he played really well today. Dustin played his best round today and Marco battled.”

Akron’s Charlie Bull won medalist honors with a 9-over 225. It was a tournament that saw seven teams, including the host school Western Kentucky, finish at 100-over-par or worse.

“The course is awesome,” Kayden said. “But It was set up extremely difficult for a college golf tournament. It was just not conducive for low scores at all. Setting it up at 7,400 yard and the pin placement really added to the difficulty.

“You would like to see birdies made, guys getting rewarded, but those were few. This week, 75 was a good score. It was just an exhausting tournament.”
