Dorothy Dix Collection video to be featured at the next APSU Provost Lecture Series

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Video production about the comprehensive Dorothy Dix Collection at Austin Peay State University will be the next project presented at the Provost Lecture Series.

Kathy Heuston, associate professor of communication at APSU, and Inga Filippo, professor and instructional librarian at APSU, will share the video Heuston and her students created at 3:00pm, Thursday, October 18th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. All sessions of the Provost Lecture Series are free and open to the public.

All sessions of the Provost Lecture Series also can be viewed in real time via online streaming at www.ustream.tv/channel.apsu. The sessions also are recorded and can be viewed later on APSU’s iTunes public site.

As the forerunner of today’s popular advice columnists, Elizabeth Meriwether Gilmer (1861-1951), writing under the pen name Dorothy Dix, was America’s most widely read and highest paid journalist at the time of her death. Her advice on love and marriage was syndicated in newspapers around the world.

The Dorothy Dix Collection is housed in the Felix G. Woodward Library at APSU. It is the most comprehensive collection available on Dorothy Dix and her writings. The collection consists of autobiographical and biographical information on Dix; all books written by and about her; column and advice writings; investigative writings; 40th anniversary articles as a columnist; correspondence between her and professional colleagues, friends and relatives; articles, book chapters, thesis, dissertations written about Dix and her work; research papers from the Dorothy Dix Symposium; professional honors and awards; travel diaries; memorabilia and passport depicting many of her travels; product testimonials; books from her library; childhood autograph book; scrapbooks from her school days; photographs and slides of Dix, her relatives, friends and homes she and her family owned; and the Dorothy Dix Collection administration.

Other sessions in the Provost Lecture Series also are planned for the academic year. All sessions are from 3:00pm-4:30pm in the MUC, Room 303 and include the following:

The Provost Lecture Series seeks to foster a spirit of intellectual and scholarly inquiry among faculty, staff and students. The program will be used as a platform for APSU faculty members who are recent recipients of provost summer grants, who have been awarded faculty development leaves and who have engaged in recent scholarly inquiry during sabbatical leaves.
