Gruga Office Chairs recalled by Sauder Woodworking Company Due to Fall Hazard

U.S. Consumer Product Safety CommissionWashington, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. The plate for the seat can break causing a fall hazard.

It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Product Information

Name of Product: Gruga Office Chairs

Units: About 70,000 in the United States and 2,300 in Canada

Importer: Sauder Woodworking Company, of Archbold, Ohio

Hazard: The seat plate can break, posing a fall hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Sauder Woodworking Company has received 17 reports of seat plates breaking, two of which involved consumers falling and receiving bumps and bruises.

Description: The recalled chairs are entertainment, executive, manager’s and task chairs with the brand name “GRUGA – Seating from Sauder.” The chairs are sold in a variety of fabrics and colors. The model number and Universal Product Code (UPC) are on a tag attached to the bottom of the seat. A blue date code is stamped on the legal disclaimer label on the underside of the chair seat. Recalled chairs are dated August 2009 and later. The following chair models have been recalled:

Sold at: Meijer, Menards, Shopko and Target and a variety of retail outlets nationwide, and online retailers including BestBuy.com and Kohls.com from August 2009 to September 2012 for between $79.00 and $399.00.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled chairs and contact Sauder for a free replacement seat plate and attachment tool.
