Austin Peay Governors Basketball’s Travis Betran named APSU Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Junior guard Travis Betran [1], of the Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Betran averaged 22.5 points on 59.3 percent shooting (16 of 27) last week, leading the Govs to a win against Oakland City before falling to Memphis. The Harlem native is now averaging 19.6 ppg over the last six games.

The transfer has done the most damage from three-point land – he hit eight of 12 last week, including five-of-six against Memphis. He ranks 13th nationally at 51 percent from downtown and 37th with 2.89 made three-pointers per game.

Betran was spectacular against Memphis, scoring a career-high 27 points on 9-of-15 from the floor and the aforementioned five made three-pointers.

For his performance, Betran was named OVC Newcomer of the Week, sharing the award with Eastern Kentucky’s Glenn Cosey. It’s Betran’s third Newcomer award this season, which makes him the first Gov with that many Newcomer honors in a season since Tyshwan Edmondson [2] earned the award six times during the 2010-11 season.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included

  • Senior Meghan Bussabarger [3], of the women’s basketball team, averaged 18.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two games last week. She recorded a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double at Middle Tennessee, Tuesday, and followed that with a season-high 25-point game against St. Catharine, Sunday. She shot 57.7 percent (15-of-26) from the field for the week.
  • Freshman Chris Horton [4], of the men’s basketball team, earned his fourth consecutive OVC Freshman of the Week honor after averaging 14.5 points and nine rebounds to go along with three blocks last week. He netted his first career 20-point outing against Oakland City, scoring 21 points and pulling down 11 rebounds in addition to five blocks against the Mighty Oaks. He also shot a scalding 82 percent (14-of-17) from the floor last week.
