Clarksville, TN – The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is located in historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee. Come explore an entire city block featuring large gallery spaces filled with fine art, science and history.

In the month of January, the Museum will feature The Passion of Kitty Harvill, Denton Ridge: Mountains to Coasts, Main Street: A Vintage Holiday, Family Fun Day: Into The Deep and so much more.

Exhibits

The Passion of Kitty Harvill
Clarksville artist Kitty Harvill paints watercolors of exotic birds. Having dual residency in both the states and Brazil, Harvill divides her time between the two countries, currently specializing in wildlife art and specifically endangered species. See her art through January 14th.

Denton Ridge: Mountains to Coasts
A variety of landscapes are depicted in this watercolor exhibit by artist Denton Ridge. Through January 7th.

Main Street: A Vintage Holiday
Items from the Museum’s collection are set as vintage storefronts for the holiday season. Through January 14th.

Beyond the Abyss: Phil Crouch and the Bathysphere Adventure
See photographs, drawings, models, and documents relating to the historic bathysphere, a spherical device used by divers to study marine life in the 1930s. Through February.

Civil Conundrum
Robert McCurley’s photographs represent the sadness, loneliness and death associated with the events of the Civil War. The poems that Civil Conundrum inspired will also be on display. Through January 28th.

Activities

Family Fun Day: Into The Deep

January 27th, 2013 1:00pm-5:00pm
What did Jacques Cousteau and Dr. William Beebe have in common? They both loved exploring the oceans. Come dive into the deep as we discover some of Dr. Beebe’s amazing, and sometimes a little weird, ocean dwellers. Be sure to visit the classroom to create your own unusual sea creature.

Let’s Find: Teeth

January 9th, 2013 10:30am-11:30am
Children 3-5 years old and their grown-ups are invited to explore the Museum from a child’s perspective. Remember to brush your teeth before you come to the Museum for this month’s activity because you’ll be visiting the office of Dr. Jefferson, a former Clarksville dentist. We will also read a story, look at some shark teeth, and make a craft. This activity is free to Museum Members. Non-members pay the regular adult admission of $7.00, plus $1.00 per child. Art & Lunch: Henri Rousseau

January 10th,  12:55pm. Free Admission (to film only)
Henri Rousseau’s professional life was spent working as a customs official. But in his spare time, he painted and was utterly convinced of the greatness of his art, despite his complete lack of formal training. Although he was heavily criticized by many for his use of brightly colored images and child-like techniques, he did bring a sense of vitality, charm and innocence to his paintings. This fascinating program includes all new location footage, re-creations and reconstructions, studies of the great works, commentary and analyses from leading authorities, art historians and scholars.

This film is free and open to the public. Guests are welcome to bring their lunches to enjoy during the presentation. The movie is approximately 50 minutes long, and is being shown in conjunction with The Passion of Kitty Harvill.

Champagne & Chocolate 2013

January 31st, 5:30pm-7:30pm
You are invited to join us for our annual Champagne & Chocolate fundraising event! During this fun-filled night you’ll be able to enjoy bubbly champagne, sweet treats, and a silent auction featuring fine art & jewelry from local and regional artists. Tickets are $50.00 per person. Located in the heart of historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee, the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is the State’s second largest general museum. With over 35,000 square feet of the region’s best hands-on activities and special events…people of all ages agree – the Customs House Museum is well worth the stop!

The Explorer’s Gallery is packed with fun, learning and fantasy in Aunt Alice’s Attic, McGregor’s Market and kitchen, and of course – the Bubble Cave! Finally, get “all aboard” to see our fantastic model trains. Our volunteer engineers “ride the rails” every Sunday afternoon from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

Regular museum hours are 10:00am to 5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sundays. Adult admission is $7.00, Sr. Citizens and College ID $5.00, Ages 6 to 18 $3.00, and under six years and Museum members are free.
