APSU Sports: Austin Peay Men’s Basketball

Austin Peay State University GovernorsCape Girardeau, MO – Kicking off its Ohio Valley Conference schedule against Southeast Missouri at the Show Me Center, Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team looked sharp at times but faded late in a hard-fought 86-84 loss to the Redhawks, Thursday.

The Govs (4-11, 0-1 OVC) dropped the OVC opener for the second straight season. Southeast Missouri moves to 10-6 (2-0 OVC).

Despite turning the ball over seven times in the opening eight minutes, Austin Peay jumped out to a 14-10 lead thanks to six points from junior Will Triggs and an awful 4-for-16 shooting start by the hosts.

Junior Travis Betran got off to a hot start in this one, hitting his first four shots and scoring 14 of the Govs first 23 points.

The two teams traded buckets for much of the first half, neither gaining a lead larger than four points through the first 16 minutes. However, a Chris Horton technical foul – which gave him four in the first half – and the subsequent free throws stretched the Redhawks lead to five, the largest for either side in the first half. Southeast Missouri would take that lead into the half.

Will Triggs [2]The Govs offense hit a lull late in the opening half, hitting only two shots from the field over the last 5:57 of the half. However, they made up for that and then some in the opening minutes of the second half, going on a 10-0 run to take a five-point lead at the 17:10 mark. Triggs scored six points during that stretch.

Triggs did his part on the other end too. With Horton limited to 15 minutes due to foul trouble, the responsibility of shutting down preseason All-OVC pick Tyler Stone laid largely on Triggs’ broad shoulders. He helped limit Stone to six points on 1-for-8 shooting in 23 foul-plagued minutes.

Travis Betran [3]The Govs opened the second half by making 10 of their first 14 shots from the floor. Triggs continued his dominance, banging away down low en route to a career-high 29 points.

While Triggs and Betran (who finished with a career-high 30 points) were dominant individually, the Govs had trouble putting away the Redhawks. The Govs owned the lead for much of the second half, but a Lucas Nutt three-pointer with 4:18 to go in the game tied it up at 68-68. An AJ Jones lay-up two possessions later put Southeast Missouri ahead for the first time since the 14:16 mark of the second half.

From there, Southeast Missouri went on a mini-run to put the Govs away. Jones hit a three, followed by a Marland Smith old-fashioned three-point play, and what had been a tie game less than two minutes before was suddenly an eight-point Austin Peay deficit.

The Govs would fight back. Betran hit a lay-up, followed by senior Anthony Campbell making one of two free throws and Triggs sticking the miss back in for a lay-up to get the deficit back to three.

Anthony Campbell [5]Once Austin Peay had to begin fouling to stop the clock, Southeast Missouri stepped to the line and converted 10 straight free throws over the final 2:20 of regulation to keep the Govs at bay. Two late Betran three-pointers, which gave him a career-high tying six on the evening, closed the gap but Austin Peay couldn’t catch the Redhawks.

The loss is the seventh in a row for the Govs, who travel Martin for a 7:30pm tip-off with UT Martin, Saturday. The Govs still seek their first road victory in the 2012-13 campaign – Austin Peay is 0-6 away from the Dunn Center this season.
