The Lady Govs return to action after picking up their season’s first road win, 67-54, at Alabama A&M, last Saturday. Southeast Missouri returns home after suffering an OVC-opening loss at Belmont, 58-71, December 31st.

The Lady Govs are 5-1 OVC openers under head coach Carrie Daniels, three of those wins coming against Southeast Missouri, including two at the Show Me Center.

Lady Govs Ledger

Austin Peay visits the Show Me Center with a 1-6 mark in games away from the Dunn Center this season. The Lady Govs also bring a two-game win streak into the contest, with back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

The Lady Govs haven’t shot the ball well this season, making just 39.5 percent of their shots during the season, but have topped 40 percent seven times and are 5-2 in those contests. Rebounding also has been a concern in the early going, with the team racking up a minus-7.3 rebounding margin.

Eight APSU players have played in every contest… Austin Peay has won the turnover battle in nine games and owns a plus-2.2 turnover margin. Eight players are averaging five or more points per game, with two players averaging double figures (Meghan Bussabarger and Leslie Martinez at 11.8 and 10.2 points per game, respectively).

Redhawks Report

Southeast Missouri enters Saturday’s contest seeking an end to a three-game losing streak that includes a loss at Western Kentucky, its season’s first home loss to Missouri State and an OVC opening loss at Belmont. The Redhawks are 3-1 at the Show Me Center in 2012-13, opening with wins against Wright State, Illinois-Chicago and Western Illinois before the December 21st loss to Missouri State.

Southeast Missouri finished the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 5-7 mark. The Redhawks feature a balanced offensive attack with six players averaging more than six points per game.

Senior Bailie Roberts and sophomore Allyson Bradshaw are each averaging a team-best 9.7 points per game while junior Jordan Hunter is chipping in 9.2 points per game. Junior Patricia Mack is the Redhawks inside threat, averaging a team-best 9.7 rebounds per game while scoring 6.3 points per game.

An Austin Peay Win Would

Give it a three-game win streak for the first time this season… be its second consecutive win away from the Dunn Center this season… make it 2-6 away from the Dunn Center… make it 1-0 in January… make it 6-1 in OVC openers under head coach Carrie Daniels… improve Daniels’ record to 78-123 overall and 51-60 in OVC play… make the Lady Govs 431-596 overall since 1976-77.

An Austin Peay Loss Would

End its two-game win streak… be its second straight loss at the Show Me Center… make it 1-7 away from the Dunn Center… make it 0-1 in January… make it 5-2 in OVC openers under head coach Carrie Daniels… drop Daniels’ record to 77-124 overall and 50-61 in OVC play… make the Lady Govs 430-597 overall since 1976-77.

Opening The Door On OVC Play

Austin Peay is 5-1 in OVC openers under head coach Carrie Daniels and will be playing on the road to open league action for the third consecutive year. The Lady Govs won their OVC opener each of Daniels’ first five seasons until falling at Tennessee State last season.

Southeast Missouri has been a common draw for the curtain-raiser in recent years, the Lady Govs winning the OVC starter against the Redhawks in 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11.

Daniels Coaches 200th Game

Carrie Daniels [4]Head coach Carrie Daniels, who is in her seventh season, became only the second head coach to lead the Lady Govs in 200 contests with Austin Peay’s victory at Alabama A&M, December 29th. She joins former head coach Susie Gardner who coached 205 games, the most by any Lady Govs coach, during her seven-year career (1996-03).

Daniels is on pace to coach her 206th game against SIU Edwardsville, January 21st.

Notes and Notables From Last Outing

Austin Peay Lady Govs at Alabama A&M

Meghan Bussabarger [5]Austin Peay ended a seven-game losing streak away from the Dunn Center – and a six-game losing streak in true road games – with Saturday’s win. The win also gave the Lady Govs back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Alabama A&M led for the game’s first six minutes – Austin Peay tying the game at the 13:59 mark on senior Meghan Bussabarger’s layup. Austin Peay gained the lead at the 13:46 mark of the first half on freshman Alexis Hardaway’s layup and did not trail the game’s remainder.

Austin Peay went eight minutes in the second half with only two field goals – by Hardaway and senior Kaitlyn Hill – but did not surrender the lead – its 12-point advantage shrinking to five points with 6:05 left. Bussabarger led the Lady Govs with 15 points – all in the first half.

Nicole Olszewski [6]Junior Nicole Olszewski was perfect from the floor (4-of-4) and finished with 13 points, including 11 second-half points.

Sophomore Kristen Stainback made all four of her free throws in the final 34 seconds after attempting one free throw in her first 281 minutes played.

Austin Peay improved to 3-1 when the combination of Stainback, Nicole Olszewski, senior Leslie Martinez, Hardaway and Bussabarger starts a game.  Daniels saw the Lady Govs pick up a win in her 200th game coached.

Previous Meeting Against Southeast Missouri

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay women’s basketball team held on for an 88-84 regular-season ending victory against Southeast Missouri, Saturday, at the Dunn Center.

Kristen Stainback [7]Austin Peay led by 16 points, 74-58, after freshman Kristen Stainback’s layup with 2:24 remaining. However, that was the final basket the Lady Govs would make as they went the game’s final 2:24 without a field goal attempt. Austin Peay still had offensive opportunities, but was forced to convert from the free throw line as Southeast Missouri fouled the Lady Govs on nearly every possession the game’s remainder.

The tactic nearly worked as Southeast Missouri closed the game with a 26-14 run, slashing the lead to four points as the final horn sounded. The Redhawks converted on 9-of-12 shot attempts, including 5-of-7 from three-point range.

Austin Peay meanwhile struggled at the free throw line, making just eight of its first 14 attempts before Stainback took control and made all six of her free throws in the final 22 seconds to secure the win.

Whitney Hanley [8]The frantic finish was indicative of a close contest throughout, despite Austin Peay never trailing in the contest. The Lady Govs led by no more than nine points in the first half. Southeast Missouri converted a traditional three-point play with 45 seconds remaining to trim the APSU lead to 36-30 at halftime.

Austin Peay was able to push its lead into double-digit territory with 11:27 remaining courtesy junior Meghan Bussabarger’s layup that gave APSU a 51-40 lead. That basket was part of a 12-2 run that took 5:45 to compile and left the Lady Govs with a 15-point advantage with 8:57 left.

Shelby Olszewski [9]Austin Peay extended the lead to its largest margin – a 17-point, 70-53 advantage – on Stainback’s three-pointer at the 4:16 mark which proved too much for Southeast Missouri to overcome.

Senior Whitney Hanley finished with a game-high 19 points and led a quintet of Lady Govs that scored more than 10 points in the contest as Austin Peay tied a season-high with 88 points. Freshman Shelby Olszewski finished with 17 points. Bussabarger, sophomore Nicole Olszewski and Stainback each scored 13 points.
