Clarksville, TN – With the ground already saturated, Sunday night’s rainfall in Middle Tennessee ran off into streams making it’s way to the Cumberland River.

There was 2.49 inches of rain in the Clarksville area alone. This caused the water levels of the Cumberland to begin rising around 6:00am Sunday Morning.

By 7:00pm Sunday, the Cumberland River had rose from 28.84 feet to 37.08 feet.

At around 40 feet, water levels begin to affect low lying areas along the riverbanks.

On Monday, based on automated measurements  the Cumberland River in Clarksville crested at 42.87 feet around 2:00pm. The river crested just below Flood Stage which is 46 feet. As of 8:30pm, water levels had dropped to 42.42 feet. The river is expected to continue dropping and should be near 36.6 feet by Wednesday morning.

The rising water caused Clarksville Parks and Recreation to close Liberty Park and McGregor Park due to high water. The boat ramp at McGregor Park along with both lower stages and part of the walkway are under water. At Liberty Park the primary access road was underwater as well.

Both parks will remain closed until all standing water subsides, and cleanup is complete.

The current forecast calls for 70% chance of rain or freezing rain through Tuesday night. Starting Wednesday, there should be cloudy skies, with no rain forecasted, for the next five days. This should allow the Cumberland River to recede to 32.8 feet by 7:00pm Saturday.
