APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Track and Field
Johnson City, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s track and field team had a big first day at East Tennessee State University’s Niswonger Invitational, Friday. The Lady Govs turned in several top marks to open the 35th annual competition.
Freshman Breigh Jones had another huge day for the Lady Govs. She lowered her personal-best to 58.15, qualifying second for Saturday’s 400m dash final. Classmate Kymmalett Ross just missed qualifying for the final with her own personal-best of 58.96.
“Breigh and Lauren were both outstanding today,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “We were very pleased with their performances. I think they’ll fare very well in the finals.”
In short sprints, senior Erika Adams also qualified for Saturday’s final with a 7.79 mark. That was one-hundredth of a second behind last week’s personal-best run at the Blazer Invite. She also set a personal-best in the 200m dash with a 25.63 mark, finishing 14th.
Senior Chantelle Grey continued to lower her season-best in the 800m run. The Missoula, MT native finished third in the event with a 2:11.86 mark, which would extend her lead over the rest of the Ohio Valley Conference to nearly nine seconds, depending on the results from meets run by other conference competitors.
Former ETSU thrower Jasmine Foster had a tremendous day on her return to Johnson City. The senior transfer placed fourth in the shot put with a 12.94m (42′ 5.50″) toss.
Junior Molly Basch tied for sixth in the pole vault, equaling her season-best 3.20m (10′ 6″) vault.
“Hopefully, we will see some more very good results tomorrow,” Molnar said. “I’m interested to see how well our relay teams can perform against some very good competition.”
Action resumes for the Lady Govs inside the ETSU Mini-Dome at David E. Walker Track and Gentry Field at 8:00am (ET), Saturday.
