Austin Peay Women’s Track and Field
Johnson City, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s track and field continued a strong overall weekend at the 35th annual Niswonger Invitational, Saturday. The Lady Govs, buoyed by two strong runs by the relay squads, showed their continued improvement has been no fluke.
The final event produced Saturday’s best performance for Austin Peay. The 4x400m relay team of freshmen Breigh Jones and Kymmalett Ross, junior Taelor Slaughter and senior Chantelle Grey finished second overall in a 21-team field with a season-best 3:53.61 run.
Earlier in the day, Jones placed third in the 400m dash final. Her 58.17 mark was two-hundredths of a second behind her personal-best, set in Friday’s qualifying round.
Ross and Grey joined juniors Kendra Kirksey and Xiamar Richards in the distance medley relay, placing seventh with a 12:36.04 mark in the first DMR of the 2013 indoor season.
In hurdles action, senior Lauren Lyles placed seventh in the 60m hurdle finals, equaling her personal-best 8.97 mark from Friday’s qualifying round.
“If Lauren hadn’t hit a hurdle, she would’ve obliterated her personal best,” Molnar said. “It was a very unfortunate thing to happen in such a strong race.”
Austin Peay’s other finals qualifier from Friday, senior Erika Adams, finished ninth in the finals of the 60m dash with a 7.81 run.
In Saturday’s lone field event, senior Cenitra Hudson placed fourth in the long jump with a personal-best 5.63m (18′ 5.75″) leap.
The Lady Govs next travel to Bloomington, IN for the Indiana Relays. The two-day event begins Friday, January 25th at the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse.
