Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan’s Martin Luther King Day Message

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”

Martin Luther King, Jr.

City of ClarksvilleClarksville, TN – I have just returned from a U.S. Conference of Mayors conference in Washington D.C. where I spent a couple of days with mayors from across the nation.

During that time, I had the opportunity to hear about the issues and challenges that other towns face. Many we share, some we don’t.

I came away from the meeting, as I always do, with gratefulness that our city, Clarksville, Tennessee, is different from other places in a very special way: our dedication to one another.

Over the past few years, we’ve been through a lot: floods and the remnants of an economic crisis that shook the nation. We’ve also brought economic growth and new opportunities for our growing community. Through it all, we’ve worked together, found consensus and made progress. And I believe we’ve only just begun.

I’m very fortunate to serve as Mayor in a city where the people are always “doing for others.” Our teachers, city employees, police officers and firefighters, business owners, and, of course, the soldiers at Fort Campbell remind us every day what it means to have a career devoted to helping others. But it’s the other people, the volunteers, the new parents, the children who also make our community rich. Every single day I witness an act of kindness and courage.

I’m thankful to live in a community where the answer to the question, “what are you doing for others?” is given clearly and daily. I appreciate all that each of you do to make Clarksville great.

I’m also humbled and proud to be your Mayor where my focus is on what I can do to help our community. My commitment continues to be to make Clarksville the very best place to live, work and raise our families.

I hope you’ll join me today to reflect on the words and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
