Grey will face off against a massive field in the 800, against some of the finest athletes in the nation. Four athletes in the field – Kent State’s Melinda Sawnor, Illinois’ Amanda Duvendack and Western Michigan’s Aisha Hodge and Rachel Whitley – advanced to the NCAA Preliminary Round during 2012 outdoor season.

Two other athletes – Michigan’s Jillian Smith and Rebecca Addison – were preliminary qualifiers in the 1500m run, with Smith advancing to the National Outdoor Championship semifinals. Both competed in the 800m run at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships, with Addison finishing eighth in the nation.

Head coach Doug Molnar thinks this opportunity will be beneficial to Grey as the season progresses.

“It’s going to be great for her as far as focus goes,” Molnar said. “Here, she’ll be able to concentrate solely on her race and not have to worry about the relay or anything else. It’s a huge chance for her in a big race.”

The women’s 800m run at the Spire Invitational is scheduled for 1:40pm, Saturday. The rest of the Lady Govs have the weekend off before next weekend’s Ohio State Tune-Up in Columbus, Ohio.
