APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s track and Field
Geneva, OH – Austin Peay State University senior runner Chantelle Grey placed 11th in the 800m run at Saturday’s Spire Invitational with an indoor personal-best 2:07.69 run.
Grey’s mark is the second-fastest in Lady Govs indoor track history, behind Austin Peay Hall of Famer and former All-American Sheena Gooding’s 2:06.17 set in 2002.“She ran a really solid race,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “She was third coming into the last lap but faded a bit down the stretch. A little more strength and she can really hang onto a top spot.
“That moves her into 35th nationally. She’s doing a great job and ran a great race. Hopefully, we can get her into the top-16 (to qualify for NCAA Indoor Championships) and get her to bigger and better things down the road.”
The Missoula, MT native held her own against some of the NCAA’s elite on Saturday. She defeated three athletes who qualified for the 800m run in the NCAA Championship Preliminary Round during the 2012 outdoor season: Western Michigan’s Aisha Hodge (17th), Illinois’ Amanda Duvendack (26th) and Hodge’s teammate Rachel Whitley (28th).
Grey and the rest of the Lady Govs will be back on the track at next weekend’s Ohio State Tune-Up in Columbus, Ohio.
