Clarksville Academy “Briefcase Boys” raise money for Cancer

Clarksville AcademyClarksville, TN – A group of third grade students at the Clarksville Academy put their talents to work, to raise money for Cancer Awareness, and their efforts have been rewarded.

In a ceremony on Friday at the school, Ms. Jerri Rule from the American Cancer Society accepted over $600.00 raised by the “Briefcase Boys” who had been building and selling paper airplanes and paper footballs since December.

Patton Samuels, Jacob Manning, Evan Kelley, Tacoma Reda, K’Ron Washington, Jack Rogers, Morgan Baxter, Jiya Patel and Elizabeth Tucker decided that they wanted to do something to bring attention to the disease, and “have a little fun” while doing it.

The “Briefcase Boys” AND girls, would walk around the school with their backpacks, and their briefcases and sell their handiwork to anyone who wanted to help.  The briefcases were filled with supplies to make the airplanes and footballs, and in some cases, they would “customize” their work.

Diana Samuels, mother to Patton, said she couldn’t discourage her son from raising money because her mother is a breast cancer survivor.

“I was touched by what he and the other children wanted to do because of my mother’s experience, but I made it clear to them that if they were going to tell people they were raising money for something, then they had to give that money away.  They couldn’t use the money for themselves.”

The ‘Briefcase Boys” would approach parents at the school who had come to exercise, and offer other students the opportunity to donate.

The Clarksville Academy Headmaster Kay Drew said, “How could you say no to a cute kid with a briefcase?”

Jerri Rule accepted the donation and praised the children for what they had done.

“We’re excited at the American Cancer Society to see young people getting involved in such a worthy cause.  I’m excited to accept their donation and am proud to thank them for their efforts.”
