Nashville Predators win over-time thriller against San Jose Sharks 1-0

Nashville, TN – The Nashville Predators snapped back into the win column with an overtime win against the San Jose Sharks, 1-0 at the Bridgestone Arena. Nashville ended a two-game losing streak which came after a four-game win streak with tonight’s win.

Nashville’s Colin Wilson tipped Ryan Ellis’ shot from the blue line past San Jose goalie Antti Niemi 2:08 in the over-time period for the victory. Ellis carried into the Sharks’ zone as Wilson drove to the net. He got his stick on it, sending it slowly through Niemi, and his second try to put it in wasn’t needed as it trickled inside the right post.

San Jose remains without a win this month. The Sharks are 0-3-3 in February after winning all seven of their January games.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Sharks, who next make two visits to play the Western Conference-leading Chicago Blackhawks sandwiched around a game at the St. Louis Blues. Their six-game road trip ends at the Dallas Stars on February 23rd.

Nashville Predators Pekka Rinne

Nashville couldn’t stay out of the penalty box through the first two periods getting called for five infractions for a total of 12 minutes of short-handed hockey. The entire third period was played penalty free.

Goalie Pekka Rinne came up big for the Predators once again as the Predators were playing a man down for most of the second period. Rinne faced 13 shots in the first period, while fending off 6 in the second.

“We didn’t start the game really well, but after the first [period] I think we showed a lot of character. The second period we took a lot of penalties and came strong in the PK and I think the guys really battled hard. They didn’t get good scoring chances,” state Pekka Rinne. “I felt in the third period we were a better team and I think that momentum kind of carried us into the overtime and obviously it was great to see that go in.”

Next Game

The Nashville Predators play their third game of a four game homestand Thursday, February 14th at Bridgestone Area against the Phoenix Coyotes. The game starts at 7:00pm.
