Nashville Predators shutdown Phoenix Coyotes 3-0 behind rock solid performance by Pekka Rinne

Nashville PredatorsNashville, TN – The Nashville Predators, behind the stellar goaltending of Pekka Rinne, have shut-out the Phoenix Coyotes in Nashville 3-0. Another sold out at Bridgestone Arena witnessed the Predators play aggressive hockey throughout the night.  This was the 19th consecutive sell-out for the Nashville Predators.

The two teams played pretty even for the first two periods as there was no scoring in those frames.  Phoenix took seven shots on goal, while Nashville slapped six.  In the second period the teams were even with six shots apiece. Neither goalie was giving any ground.

It wasn’t until the third period that Gabriel Bourque got a power play goal on a tip-in at 2:40 into the period that started the scoring for Nashville, and this would not be the end of it. Bourque was assisted by Martin Erat and Shea Weber on the goal.

“He’s (Gabriel Bourque) very versatile – forechecking, working hard and at the same time he can score, so it’s great to have him. He can move all over the roster because of the way he plays, so it’s great to have him,” stated Predators Forward Colin Wilson.

Nick Spaling scored the Predators second goal on a snap shot at 9:38 with an assist from Mat Halischuk and Colin Wilson and the Predators were ahead 2-0.

“I got a nice pass from Hal (Matt Halischuk) there, I had a lot of room in the slot so I just wanted to shoot it and Willy (Colin Wilson) was going to the front; I think he got in front of him and got a good screen on him,” said Predators Forward Nick Spaling.

Then to put some “ice”ing on the cake Mike Fisher finished the night off with a snap shot goal at 18:16 to make it the final score, 3-0, with assists from Ryan Ellis and Martin Erat.

Pekka Rinne stopped all 19 shots he faced in net, giving him back to back shut outs in Nashville. Rinne is fast becoming the best goalie in the NHL with his performance of late.

The Predators have been winning the low scoring games. “Everything you have to do to be successful has to start with being able to defend. Once you’re able to defend, I think everything piggyback’s off of that,” said Predators Coach Barry Trotz. “We’re doing a better job in the defensive zone. It’s starting to extend down the rink a little bit. Once we get that balance, it’s where we want to be.”
