Austin Peay State University Lady GovsEdwardsville, IL – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team embarks on the 2012-13 season’s final road trip, Saturday, when they travel to SIU Edwardsville for a 4:00pm (CT) match-up with the Cougars.

The Lady Govs seek to bring an end to their three-game losing streak overall and a three-game slide against the Cougars.

SIU Edwardsville has lost two of three in February after ending January on a three-game winning streak.

Austin Peay Lady Govs

Austin Peay State UniversityAustin Peay brings a 1-10 OVC record into the contest, its lone win coming at Jacksonville State, January 28th.   The Lady Govs’ defense has struggled in the team’s OVC slate, allowing OVC opponents to shoot better than 40 percent from the floor nine times in 11 games (45.1 percent combined) and average 70.9 points per game.

APSU has won the turnover battle in 13 games this season – forcing its last five opponents into a total of 18.4 turnovers per game – and owns a plus-2.26 turnover margin. In addition, the Lady Govs defense has recorded 10-plus steals 14 times this season.

Only four APSU players have played in every contest. Seven players are averaging five or more points per game, with two averaging double figures (Meghan Bussabarger and Leslie Martinez at 12.7 and 11.3 points per game, respectively).

SIU Edwardsville Cougars

SIU Edwardsville CougarsSIU Edwardsville is fourth in the OVC West at 6-6, but own the tie-breaker against third-place UT Martin (6-5) thanks to a 67-66 OT win, January 26th, and a 66-63 road victory over the Lady Skyhawks, February 9th.

The Cougars are shooting a league-worst 26.7 percent (79-for-296) from beyond the arc this season; only two players (Valerie Finnin and Jessie Wendt) are hitting even 30 percent from three.

SIU Edwardsville is controlling the boards, allowing an OVC-low 33.9 rebounds per game while pulling down 41.8 for a league-best plus-8.0 rebound margin (+9.9 rpg in conference play).  The Cougars lead the conference with 17 offensive rebounds per game, getting a second opportunity on 42.7 percent of misses.

Senior Raven Berry leads the Cougars in scoring (14.5 points, sixth in the OVC) and rebounding (9.3 rpg, fourth).  Sophomore Tierny Austin is also averaging double figures at 11.7 ppg.

End a one-game road losing streak… be its second road conference win this season… make it 3-9 away from the Dunn Center in 2012-13… improve it to 2-10 in OVC play… make it 1-3 in February… improve Daniels’ record to 79-133 overall and 52-69 in OVC play… make the Lady Govs 432-606 overall since 1976-77.

An Austin Peay Loss Would

Be its fourth consecutive loss… be its second consecutive loss away from the Dunn Center… make it 1-11 in OVC play… make it 2-10 away from the Dunn Center this season… drop Daniels’ record to 78-134 overall and 51-70 in OVC play… make the Lady Govs 431-607 overall since 1976-77.

Notes and Notables from Last Game

Austin Peay Lady Govs vs. Tennessee State

Nicole OlszewskiJunior Nicole Olszewski grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and scored six points. Senior Meghan Bussabarger scored 11 points – all in the second half. Freshman Lauren Maki scored her first collegiate field goal and finished with 2 points and a blocked shot in a career-high 10 minutes played.

Austin Peay had a nine-minute drought without a field goal in the first half and followed that with a four-minute second half drought.

Meghan BussabargerTennessee State outscored Austin Peay 18-2 in the first period drought and 11-0 in the second half version. The Lady Govs committed 21 turnovers against Tennessee State – it is only the third time in OVC play APSU has committed 20-plus turnovers.

Austin Peay was credited with a season-low five steals. Austin Peay tied a season-high with five blocked shots, including two by senior Kaitlyn Hill and one each by freshmen Lauren Maki and Tiasha Gray and senior Leslie Martinez.
