Who Are You?

Most people don’t realize who they really are. Most of us think of who we are at this very moment, not who we were created to be.

Adults, young and old alike, initially define their worth based on what they do for income. Their view of self-worth usually branches out from there, as that is easy to do, limiting who they are from the world’s eyes, escaping having to define who they really want to be. This may come from past failures and unfulfilled desires.

I think our failures have so much to do with our view of our potential. For example, if you’ve failed at something once or twice, that immediately puts a lower ceiling in your perception of potential achievement. The problem with that thinking is that it also limits your perception of what God can do – He’s not even in that self-made picture. The ceiling represents your potential by your own effort. The funny thing is that the ceiling is placed there by YOU – not anyone else.

You may be thinking, “Mat, I’ve heard my whole life that ‘you can’t do it’ or ‘you’re never going to amount to a thing!’ So, someone else put that ceiling in my mind.” I’d have to respectfully disagree.

Sure, early on in childhood we’re affected by words from our peers, adults, parents, etc. You may still hear those words from others even as an adult. However, as we mature in our walk with our heavenly Father, those words can either be seeds that you germinate and nourish or you can pull them out of your thinking by their root.

Don’t let people determine your worth. God’s determination of your worth is above all others.

1 John 4:4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

[Perfect timing alert…] While writing this post I was listening to Pandora. The music group Selah was singing a song called “You Raise Me Up.”

Check out a portion of the lyrics:

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up to more than I can be.

God wants you to be who HE intended you to be. The only way to do that is by recognizing who He is in your life. Recognize where He is in every situation that you face. I believe this begins (like the beginning of the above song) when we sit with our Father.

Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

Take time, right now, even if it’s for just a minute, and ask God who He wants you to be. Ask Him how He sees you. If you wait and listen He WILL answer. Un-cloud your mind for a few minutes.

Lamentations 3:24-26 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him.” The Lord is good to those whose hope is in Him, to the one who seeks Him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

Feel free to comment and share with me what God reveals to you today. May God bless you today as you seek Him for guidance and direction in your life!

[Wait a second, are you getting all of this, but don’t have a relationship with God? Check this out, and this too, just for starters. Ask God to be a part of your life and start living the way He wants you to live. His way, with His love and by His grace.]
