Custom House Museum March 2013 Exhibits and Activities

The Customs House Museum and Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is located in historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee. Come explore an entire city block featuring large gallery spaces filled with fine art, science and history.

In the month of March, the Museum will feature Reflective: Women Painting Women, Trousseau, The Vision of Herbert Baggett, Let’s Find: Birds, Sunday Family Fun: A Hare-Raising Afternoon and so much more.

Exhibits

Eat Well, Play Well
This highly interactive exhibit encourages healthy living by teaching the science of making healthy food choices and helping children and adults discover that there are many fun and interesting ways to stay active. Hands-on components teach appropriate serving size, test your flexibility and balance, and more! Through May 5th.

Women Painting Women
In celebration of Women’s History Month, this exhibit features thirteen contemporary female artists who paint primarily figurative work. Most of these award-winning women are from Tennessee. March 7th through May 12th.

Trousseau
Vintage clothing and other ladies’ items throughout several decades are on display in this Women’s History Month exhibit. Opens March 7th.

Men’s Image of Women
This photography exhibit explores the subject of women by various male artists. Opens March 7th.

The Vision of Herbert Baggett
See folk art sculptures by local artist Herbert Baggett. His figures of animals, “bird-trees”, and “kid-racks” have been whittled out of cedar wood.

New to the Collection
Recent acquisitions to the museum’s collection are on display in Heritage Hall, including pieces by Hunt Slonem and Margaret Evangeline.

Activities

Let’s Find: Birds

March 13th & 14th, 10:30am–11:30am
Children 3 – 5 years old and their grown-ups are invited to explore the museum from a child’s perspective. This month we will be looking for Mr. Baggett’s birds. We will also read a story and make a craft. This activity is free to museum members. Non-members pay the regular adult admission of $7.00, plus $1.00 per child 3 years and older. Siblings are always welcome.

Sunday Family Fun: A Hare-Raising Afternoon

March 10th, 1:00pm–5:00pm
We’re celebrating rabbits in honor of Hunt Slonem’s painting, “Hutch,” in the museum lobby – better known to the kids as the “Big Bunny” painting. Please join us this Family Day for some happy, hopping rabbit crafts and stories. This activity is free with your paid admission or museum membership. Celebrating the Strength of Women: A Women’s History Month Celebration

11:00am—1:00pm – Brunch provided by The Choppin’ Block
12:00pm—12:30pm – The Role of Women During Wartime – Krista Castillo, Director of Fort Negley Visitors Center, will discuss the roles women played during the Civil War, WWI, and WWII.

Great Women Artists Film Series: Georgia O’Keefe

March 21st, 12:10pm
Free Admission. In the Museum’s Turner Auditorium.

The Museum will be closed Sunday, March 31st for Easter.

About the Customs House Museum

Located in the heart of historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee, the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is the State’s second largest general museum. With over 35,000 square feet of the region’s best hands-on activities and special events…people of all ages agree – the Customs House Museum is well worth the stop!

The Explorer’s Gallery is packed with fun, learning and fantasy in Aunt Alice’s Attic, McGregor’s Market and kitchen, and of course – the Bubble Cave! Finally, get “all aboard” to see our fantastic model trains. Our volunteer engineers “ride the rails” every Sunday afternoon from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

Regular museum hours are 10:00am to 5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sundays. Adult admission is $7.00, Sr. Citizens and College ID $5.00, Ages 6 to 18 $3.00, and under six years and Museum members are free.
