For Hudson, it was his first home run of the season – which also drove in Jordan Hankins and Craig Massoni, who opened the inning by getting on base via a walk and a hit by pitch.

Hudson finished the day with two hits and four RBI, while Hankins and Massoni had two hits each.

Tyler Hudson (1-0) got the win in relief, hurling two shutout innings – including inducing an inning ending double play in the eighth to get out of a jam.

Overall, Rogers, Don Whitson and Tommy Hager combined to throw 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief after the Spartans (4-5) had taken a 7-4 lead in the fifth inning.

Craig MassoniAustin Peay had battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring three times, on three hits and a walk. Kevin Corey would draw a walk to open the inning and move to third base on a single by Hankins. Massoni would follow with an RBI single scoring Corey.

After Michigan State recorded the first out of the inning, Hankins scored on a fielder’s choice by Hudson – to cut the Spartans lead to one.

That brought up P.J. Torres, who laced a double into the left-field corner, with Hudson coming all the way around from first base with the tying run to knot the score 7-7. Torres had two hit in the contest.

Austin Peay opened up the game by putting up three runs in the bottom of the first inning on three hits.

Rolando GautierRolando Gautier got things going by drawing a leaf-off walk and moved into scoring position at second base on a sacrifice bunt by Corey. That brought up Hankins, who laced an opposite-field double down into the left-field corner to drive in Gautier to make it 1-0.

An out later, Govs shortstop Reed Harper blasted his second home run of the season — a two-run shot — over the fence over the left field fence to make it 3-0. Harper finished the game with three RBI.

Michigan State would respond in its next at bat collecting three hits – including an RBI single by Kevin Goergen – to cut the Governors lead back to 3-1.

Harper would strike again in the bottom of the third inning, driving a ball deep into the right field corner for a sacrifice fly, scoring Hankins – who had reached on a walk and moved to third on a single by Massoni.

The score would remain that way until the top of the fifth inning, when the Spartans sent 12 batters to the plate against three different Gov pitchers in scoring six runs.

The inning started with Michigan State getting its first four hitters on – including a RBI double by Jordan Keur and a two-run single by Ryan Krill to tie the game 4-4. Austin Peay starter Zach Hall would only last one more batter before being lifted for Kacy Kemmer.

Kemmer wouldn’t have too much luck in giving up three runs on three hits and a walk, while retiring only one hitter, as Michigan State build a 7-4 lead.
