APSU Lady Govs Softball travels to Louisville

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN -Austin Peay State University’s softball team will play its season’s final in-season tournament this weekend as it travels to Louisville to participate in the Red and Black Classic.

Along with the Lady Govs (5-3), the field for the classic will feature Miami-Ohio (2-8), Illinois State (11-10), as well as two nationally ranked teams in No. 14 Michigan (14-5) and host No. 13 Louisville (16-3).

Austin Peay will open play 10:00am, Friday, at Ulmer Stadium versus Miami-Ohio. It is the second straight season the Lady Govs and Red Hawks have met on the softball diamond.

On Saturday, the Lady Govs will play two games, beginning with Illinois State, 11:00am, followed by host Louisville, 4:00pm.

For Austin Peay, it will be the first meeting in the program’s history with Louisville. The Illinois State matchup will be the first since the 2006 season and the fifth time overall.

The Lady Govs will wrap up the classic 9:00am, Sunday with a second matchup versus Miami-Ohio.

Coming into the classic, Austin Peay is led offensively by sophomore second baseman Laurel Burroughs, who sporting a red-hot .577 batting average, with four doubles, two triples and two home runs. She is also tied for the team lead with 10 RBI.

Burroughs is followed by last year’s first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference team member junior Lauren de Castro, who is hitting at a .417 clip, with a double, a home run and three triples.

In the circle, de Castro tops the Lady Govs pitchers with a 3-1 win-loss mark and a 0.78 ERA. She has 21 strikeouts in 27 innings of work.

Senior Morgan Brewer, with a 2-2 win-loss mark, has the other two Austin Peay wins this season.
