Austin Peay Softball opens OVC play this weekend against Eastern Illinois

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University softball team is ready to open the Ohio Valley Conference schedule with a weekend series against the Eastern Illinois Lady Panthers at Cheryl Holt Field.

The two teams have a double-header starting at noon Saturday, with the rubber game of the match on Sunday at noon.

For Austin Peay (9-7) it marks the first time since the 2007 season the Lady Govs will enter conference play with a winning record, which is also the last time they qualified for the OVC post-season tournament.

Eastern Illinois (10-8) comes into the conference-opening weekend having won its last three games, giving up only one run during that stretch.

Offensively, the Lady Govs are led by sophomore Laurel Burroughs’ .431 batting average, which includes seven doubles, three triples and two home runs.

Four other Austin Peay players, juniors Lauren de Castro (.388), Kayla Davidson (.378) and Amanda De Vries (.314) as well as freshman Mel Pavel (.349) are hitting more than .300.

The Panthers only own one player, Hannah Cole, hitting better than .300 at .412 on the season, with four doubles and three home runs.

In the circle, de Castro leads Austin Peay with a 5-3 win-loss mark, including an ERA of 2.33 and 30 strikeouts in 51 innings of work.

Senior Morgan Brewer has the other four Lady Govs wins and comes into the weekend with a 4-4 mark, with 20 strikeouts in 41.2 innings.

Hanna Mennenga leads the Panther pitchers with a 6-3 win-loss record, a 1.38 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 61 innings pitched.
